Scratch this one off the list
Gazette Issue 35204 published on the 27 June 1941
SUPPLEMENT TO THE LONDON GAZETTE, 1 JULY, 1941
    No. 4265889 Lance-Corporal (acting Corporal)
Henry. Lowes, The Durham Light Infantry.(Ex RNF)

British Empire Medal, (Military) G.VI.R., 1st issue (No.4265889 A/Cpl. Henry Lowes), in damaged card box of issue, minor edge bruising, nearly extremely fine sold for £300 by Dix Noonan Webb 5th April 2006

B.E.M. London Gazette 1 July 1941. Recommendation states: ‘4265889 Lance-Corporal Henry Lower (note different surname to medal), 10th Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry, Iceland Force’ ‘Lance-Corporal Lower has shown outstanding devotion to duty, initiative and resource in command of an isolated coast watch post, often under very trying climatic conditions’.

Only 10 B.E.M’s. awarded to the D.L.I. in the Second World War

Anyone know where the Auction houses get their copies of citations/recommendations ? Even with the surname altered as above the NA search still draws a blank! 10 BEM`s corresponds to my roll to which is a relief.

    Hi Jim,

Assuming you have used the free route via the online SE at National Archives have you tried variations of units and names? Sometimes the names/units are spelt wrong by the NA which makes them a bit difficult to find. Sadly the SE does not show variations just exact spellings that they have put in.

Jim, I know it mightn't be much help, but recently I found a MiD (officer KIA) which had not been indexed for searching in TNA's Docsonline - was in POW E&E awards even though he himself was KIA. I suspect the escaper's testimony would have been vital for MiD award. (Will put them on a sep. thread when I have a spare moment, but please find attached)

To be honest the POW awards are my least favourite pdfs to look through as the documentation can be all over the place ... so not surprising if some were passed over during the data input process. This particular chap's MiD was 'in amongst' MC papers for fellow officer on same mission, and it was lucky that I found his name in Wiki article of all places.

Have you tried papers from recipients area? If auction houses are selling medals, some might likely come with some original documentation given to recipient ... no?

It's always best to use Regtl No, when searching for individuals who names may have been misspelt, but I checked the first 2 on your list and agree - no result with TNA. Pity you as you don't have no.s for some of them... all I can offer is "best of luck!" with them.

Thanks lads have`nt gone into these options in great detail but from what I have tried again there doesnt seem to be a link or clue to any of them. How many Qualtrough`s from the IoM would you expect to find listed but as Andy states depends on the exact spelling on the document.I could think of an alternative for Bustard !
Cheers anyway I`ve got a couple of free days...better keep trawling.

Thanks Diane I`m about to see if they feature on the same pages as those gazetted with them hopefully they may be tucked away ...but thinking about it Govan and Scottow were gazetted together and both are resisting my efforts to find them! Scottow rings so much of a bell! I`m going to re-check my records/files I have already for indeed as you say his award may be on another persons file. The auction houses occasionally state citation not available which I had assumed was not listed. One such group came up in late 2008 but a few months later the same group appeared at a different auction house with citation...weird!
    Thanks

Just searched the TNA using other names and numbers from the same London Gazette page ...no matches for any of those recipients looks like none of their recommendations are on the TNA (at least not under their own names and numbers)

B.E.M. London Gazette 10 April 1945: Sergeant, Durham Light Infantry. The recommendation states: ‘W/Sergeant William Tilley, 53 Searchlight Regiment R.A. This N.C.O. has been an Assistant Battle Instructor of his Troop for the past two years, during which time he has shown great devotion to duty both day and by night. The entry in the London Gazette Birthday Honours List in July 1941 which listed the award did have his name spelt correctly. TNA advised that the citation had not survived.

I have known about this man and his award for some time and have visited recently the site of the relevant Coast Watching Post (Skagastrond) in pursuit of my researches on 70th Infantry Brigade.

An Icelandic Author who is writing a piece on Cpl Lowes has been waiting for this citation for some time, as have I. Delighted to see it has turned up - many thanks.
