My mistake a little I should have mention that it was only the RA and RCA units In that case then you have them all. M10 Wolverine (3" Gun) M10 Achilles (17pdr) Valentine SP Archer (17pdr) Well there were also a couple of 40mm Bofors armed 3 ton trucks, although hardly Anti-tank vehicles they were used as ground support. British Morris C9B and a Canadian version on a Ford chassis C39QB/F60B
As Von Poop says - the Yanks liked them too much - the Wolverine another derivation of the Sherman - with the British 17 pounder 76.2mm - was a lend lease unit and is purported to have been used by 2nd A/T Regiment in the 3rd Armoured Div - which makes me pause as I am aware of the 1st - 2nd - 6th - 7th - 10th - 11th and the Guards Armoured divs - BUT I never heard of the 3rd Armoured Div .....unless of course they were not British !
On re-reading my last post - I looked back at my source to find that - apparently - there was a BRITISH 3rd Armoured Div - if so that is news to me - anyone know where they were - possibly Burma of which I am ill infomed on that campaign. Wolverines
Tom , They dunno what they on about on that website, no such thing as 2 AT Regt. RA 1939-45 A/Tk Index 20th A/T Regt was in 3rd Inf Div. Maybe chap who did illustration got comfused.
Owen - not too surprised as the artist was a Frenchman - beautiful drawings though - checked with 3rd ARMORED Div of the USA - they make no mention of Wolverines as I thought they should as it is mainly a North American animal - BUT they did capture Cologne !
There's some doubt suggested by Bovington & John Buckley that Wolverine & Achilles were ever really 'official' designations, though they were certainly referred to in that manner the more generic 'M10' seems to be the most definitive official nomenclature, the more evocative names being apparently far from widely employed and only crystallising as 'accepted' postwar. I'd be interested to hear if any Vets remember things one way or the other? Or what people's archive based impressions are. Imagine trying to list all the German SPATGs present... could take a while. Does the A30 Challenger qualify? Not technically an SPATG/TD but often (universally?) ended up being used in that role. Cheers, Adam.
I am not sure if the Archer was used in the netherlands I think the units received them in Germany, will check it out.
