Tom, Condolences to you and your brother's family.on Larry's loss.

    Just seen your note.

Remember your brother when he was a member of the BBC radio sports team "Sports Report",I think they called it that broadcast in the old days at 5PM on Saturdays with its distinctive opening music fanfare....as they use to say...."over to Larry Canning".

I remember all the stars playing at Elland Road when Leeds Utd were in the old 1st Division in the first season after the war.Saw most of the home matches that season.I remember seeing Stan Cullis, termed a centre half in those days, not a centre back, playing for Wolves...a very dependable defender.Another good player I saw playing was George Hardwick who was the England captain at the time and was playing at right back for Middlesborough. All had recently returned from the war service as had some of the masters at school.

When I saw AV that season,I remember, the inside left being a pretty good player by the name of Dorset.Unfortunately all my programmes were "lost" when I left home to get married.

Those were days when it was difficult to travel because of inadequate public transport...long queues at the bus stop and being cut off as the bus was full as it was being boarded...then just getting to the ground on kick off.

10 pence return from Castleford to Leeds,on to Elland Rd by tram. For 6 pence you could buy a meat and veg course from a cafe in Leeds Kirkstall Market.9 pence admission into the boys enclosure on the slagheap at the far end of the ground. Then getting back to Castleford and the sports editions were out at 6pm from the Yorkshire Evening Post and the Yorkshire Evening News...take your pick to see the account of the match you had just watched.I remember the Sports edition headline after Leeds beat Blackpool, one of their few victories in that season....."United make Blackpool rock"....happy days.

    Harry -
now you are going back some- Dickie Dorset - started off in the forward line abut when George Cummings hung up his boot Dickie went to left back and was just as good as George in sending right wingers - including Stan Matthews into the stands- no reds or yellows in those days - and now they kick a balloon around- players like Cullis and Hardwick - Male -Wright- Powell - Ford- are no longer as the overpaid "Stars" of to-day don't come close- and all for less than 20 pounds a week - in season - nowt in the summer

    Great days for football
    Cheers

    Thanks Adam-
this dementia is appearing to become bigger than cancer - without the research money -this is the third member of the family inside two years - and 2012
isn't starting off too well - as unlike Niccar- I am not chancing that 9 hour flight to the funeral- daughter can do the needful on Tuesday as she lives in London.
    Cheers

    Hello Tom,

Alzheimers (dementia) is what did for my father 6 years ago, albeit I and my next youngest brother called him 'Columbo' when he was in his late 30's, because he couldn't remember anything, ever. You know, the tap with fingers to the forehead and the expression 'err'! No dirty mack involved...

Anyway, seeing this physically fit, 6' 3'', bloke with loads of presence but no memory more up to date of 1945 slip away was sad, but then he was completely oblivious of his predicament. I was shuttling from London to Edinburgh every other week for nearly two years, but Dad didn't know who I was; possibly another blessing for him.

Your brother probably wouldn't have known what was happening to him, but for 'frustration'; he would know that he should remember but couldn't. Not the worst way to go...

Anyway Tom, if you ever decide to make another trip to the UK, oxygen mask and drugs induced, please give me advance warning, because I'd like to meet up with you and shake your hand - it's called respect, but me thinks some folk on this forum don't know what that is.

If you could get Brian and Ron along at the same time, all the better!

    My respect and best wishes,

    Steve.

    Steve

now then the forum is essentially all of us getting along - witness Jeff's comment and Owen's - Jeff and I have many spats in the past but when it comes to the crunch - he is there - as I would be also for him in the same circumstances.

I frankly haven't the guts to fly over to the Uk anymore as I should finish up as Niccar did
as we shared the same problem and Brian would need a team of nurses just to move and Ron would be more than welcome but we have had a strained relationship for some time now- but he set that aside and recognized Veronica's death as we all had lunch in London a few years ago - and enjoyed each other's company...

But that's life and we bash on regardless as the Tankies were won't to say
    cheers
    Tom
