One which will be a must for the remainder of this week, the set does give that sense of confinement which the house itself exudes.
I agree with the other comments - excellent , it spells out the twisted wasteful character of the "Final Solution".

Just watched it on iplayer. I think it's really well put together and well acted.

Looking forward to watching the next part tonight.

Mind you, if I was there hiding and another family was there bickering like the Van daans I'd kick them out for fear of them giving us away.

Part two tonight and the atmosphere is being slowly cranked up. So far this has been so well done, a big credit to the acting. The sense of isolation is almost palpable.
I feel sorry for Anne's mother trying her best with her fear and feelings.

A very human and impressive adaptation , once again "Auntie" has done very well.
Looking forward to tomorrow evening - even though we all know the outcome and the tragic end which awaits you just wish it had turned out otherwise.

To date it is not known who broke silence , why or how the two familes and their guest were betrayed , perhaps this will never be known.

The toilet scene reminded me of two squaddies in Iraq that were larking around near a massive toilet and dropped their rifles in a 'poo' trench and had to get them out .....Not nice

    (No it wasn't me)

As others say its whipping up to a tragic climax :(
    Cheers

    Part Three
Getting to know the personalities of this true life drama is going to make the ending so much harder to take.
The actress who plays Anne is brilliant, she's a petulant child one moment and a mature young woman the next.
As has already been said, well done Auntie.

Really enjoying this dramatisation. "No holds barred" and a growing relationship between Anne and Peter.

BTW - Two of my daughters know Felicity Jones (Margot). She went to their school.

The final part sadly ended in the inevitable. I think that the actors should be commended for their portrayl of the characters, particularly the horror at being discovered. It must have been an unimaginable experience for Anna Frank, her family and the other occupants.

After watching the first part, I was not sure that the series would be that good, but the second part to the last got better and better. Well done the BBC for yet another masterpiece.

Apparently some of the filming took part in the Frank's actual home before they moved to their hiding place and at the set where filming took place, the rooms was constructed to the actual dimensions of the real thing.

Brilliant drama, so well done and acted. It was so much better than I thought it would be.
The final one was so poignant. Only through individuals can you glimpse the devastation of the holocaust.
For Otto Frank to survive his family leaves me numb and uncomprehending. :poppy:

Thought the whole thing was absolutely excellent. BBC Drama at it's best.

I sat and watched it all this week with my 10 year old daughter. She had read Anne Frank's diaries at school, but the series profoundly affected her. Personally that's not only sign of good drama and acting, but not a bad thing in many respects. I hope it had a similar affect on many, many others.

I thought Ellie Kendrick was superb as Anne Frank. I suspect that won't be the last we'll see of her.

All 5 episodes are still available on the iPlayer, as are the documentary on Anne shown immediately after the last episode on BBC4 and the documentary on Rutka Laskier, another teenage diarist murdered in the Holocaust, that was shown after the first episode. Normally, programmes remain available for 7 days after the initial broadcast but all episodes of drama series sometimes stay on the iPlayer for 7 days after the last one.

Additionally, the continuity announcer said that, at least in Scotland, the series will be repeated on January 24 on BBC2. It was the BBC Scotland announcer but I'd be surprised if this isn't UK wide

Whilst waiting for the obvious to happen and holding back the tears as they were led out of the building, the only thing I could think to say that felt appropriate at that time was 'Bastids'.

    Her acting was sublime.

I watched the doc straight after and it told of what happened after the capture in the annex. Heartbreaking.

The two men helpers were taken to Amersfoort (Holland) on 11 September 1944 without being put on trial.

Johannes Kleiman (the guy wearing glasses) was released from Amersfoort on 18 September 1944 due to ill health. He died in Amsterdam in 1959.

Victor Kugler escaped on 28 March 1945 when he and fellow internees were being taken to Germany as forced labourers. He emigrated to Canada in 1955 and died in Toronto in 1989.

The train which they were on was attacked/bombed, I think by American aircraft.

This is why the Beeb wins so many awards for drama. Well cast, superb acting, brilliant script. This will be the drama about Anne Frank et al for a long time to come.

A new paperback edition of her diary is now for sale, I picked up a copy in Asda this afternoon - it is more than a few years since I last read it .
