For those interested, immediately following the 5th and final part of the new Anne Frank drama on the 9th January, is another showing of the excellent Oscar winning documentary from 1995 called Anne Frank Remembered. A joint BBC/Disney production narrated by Kenneth Branagh

    19-30 - 21-30 on BBC4

I read the diary so long ago, not sure if it was unabridged or not. I should get another copy.

All published editions, as far as I am aware, are from the abridged version. Otto Frank wanted to protect Anne and therefore edited out those sections which were the musings of a normal teenage girl: even though she was living in an abnormal situation.

I see from the website mentioned by Gage that the space occupied by the Franks and the others was temporarily furnished. The picture made it look cosy. I took my Mum to see the museum some years ago, as she used to walk past the house on the way to work in 1943. She was curious, but found the place had a disturbing atmosphere that she could not explain. Other people around us felt the same and could not wait to get out of there. For my Mum, I suppose it had to do with bringing back suppressed memories of having lived through that time and also having a brother that was being hidden by her own family.

If you are ever in Amsterdam, it is worth taking time to visit the house and museum.

Listened to an interview with the director on R4 today. Must say it sounded quite promising.

I once went to see a stage play about Anne Frank - the girl playing Anne Frank was very poor. Massive attack of stage fright I think.
One scene stood out where the German troops came on stage searching, shouting Schnell, Schnell, etc and a guy sat near the front shouted "She's in the attic!" Sorry, I did laugh.............

The Dutch National Archives had to go to the trouble ( and expense) to actually prove beyond any reasonable doubt that the diary written by Ann Frank was authentic.
The reason for this was the continual propaganda and willful slight and ignorance which the so called "revisionist historians" and their supporters kicked up about it.
I believe that Faurission's finding, his views his so called "scholarly research" was found to be utterly baseless and devoid of fact in respect of any question of the diary being other than what it was proven to be.

I look forward to seeing this series of programmes if only for the memory of this quite remarkable young girl and her family who were murdered.

Four years ago my youngest and I spent a few days in Amsterdam and visited the house and the museum - it is worth seeing - " a warning from history".
The following year we visited Auschwitz-Birkenau a very natural sequence of events.

If I'm honest I think it would have at least got a snigger from me but that's my squaddie sense of humour

I must admiit I'm quite looking forward to this programme. I know very little about Anne Frank's life (Never read the book etc).

    Cheers

Watched the first one tonight and thought it was very well done. Good acting and the music worked really well.
They managed to get a good sense of claustrophobia and dread.
The Van Danns would have made a difficult situation even harder in my view. But the Nazi's brought the world no tolerance.
