    Hi all,

In 1945 (iirc after at least VE day) Field Marshal Alexander proposed that anti-tank duties should be transferred to the Royal Armoured Corps. Field Marshal Montgomery came out in favour of the Royal Artillery continuing to have those duties.

Eventually a joint committee decided that things should remain as they were.

I was wondering, though, as to why these two Field Marshals had the opinions (or at least made the statements) that they did. Did either of them have personal connections to the RAC or RA? Both came up from the infantry.

It could very well be that Alexander was making a suggestion based the seemingly lower value of the anti-tank regiments in Italy. But at the very high level he operated at, I'm not clear if that is something he would have been aware of? But possibly, since the corps anti tank regiments were broken up over the winter of 44-45.

The anti-tank regiments had a pretty good record in NWE, and I would think Monty's attitude would have been "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I can't think of any reason why he would have been dissatisfied with the existing arrangement.
