Hi all. I am researching the US presence in the Aleutian Islands c. 1942. My name is Lorraine Baur, I am the daughter of Leonard William Baur Jr. who served in the Aluetians in the army on a supply ship the William L. Thompson from May thru December 1942. I would love to hear from anyone connected in any way. He's 88 years old and I'd love to be able to give him some contacts or more info. He especially remembers the crew rescuing the survivors of the ship Gaines (sorry don't have the whole name) during a storm up there. Thanks. Lorraine Baur Ukiah California loni_baur@adelphia.net

Lorraine Baur Ukiah California loni_baur@adelphia.net Welcome Lorraine. We discussed the Aleutians not long ago. Not the glamourous part of the Pacific however just as important if you were one of those who were there. The ship was: Date 11/24/43, Ship John P. Gaines, Type Liberty, Cause Split, Result Sunk, Location Alaska, Deaths Crew 3; AG 1; Army 7
As is evident, a dangerous place for ships and merchant mariners. U.S. Ships Sunk or Damaged in Pacific Area during World War II Alaskan waters (51 ships) U.S. Ships sunk or damaged on Alaska coast, West coast of U.S., Pacific Ocean area, Philippines, or Okinawa During World War II
We have a WWII Navy vet residing in our home , and he has shared many stories with us . Mr James Carter was a signalman on a tanker -loaded with fuel -in the Aleutians during summer of 1944. Ships had to bear many storms, with sixty foot seas and cold.
