Capt Bill Firstly, many thanks for your contribution to this fascinating thread. As you may have realised by now, once your contribution was made, my work started, but I just had to had to stop for a minute to draw the attention of forum members to something to which you have just drawn my attention. I am referring to the Smollan brothers, Harold, Dennis & Joshua. In 1943 Dennis, in the RAFVR at the age of 21, was killed and is buried at Hazelrigg Jewish Cemetery In 1944 Joshua, in the RAFVR at the age of 29, was killed and is buried at Becklingham War Cemetery In 1945 Harold, in the West Yorkshire Rgt at the age of 19, was killed and is commemorated on the Malta Memorial. As someone who saw how devastated his parents were at the loss of one of their sons in the RAF, I simply can't begin to visualise the feelings of the Smollan boy's parents when they had to face loosing three of their sons in three sucessive years. What a terrible price to pay for the ultimate victory ! Lest we forget. Ron Ron, You have started my interest also - so ive added a few bits of info to a new thread http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/war-cemeteries-war-memorial-research/25070-ajex-smollan-brothers.html

Capt Bill, Englandphil, RecceMitch (Paul) & Smidge Many thanks for all your fresh input, more research for me now at this end Best regards Ron
Spidge In posting No.51 above I see you say: Sadly, both were drowned on the same day. That, regrettably, is only the half of it. When I wenr to add their details on to a spreadsheet I realised that their service numbers were consecutive. meaning, of course, that they had signed up together ! Whilst thinking about service numbers I am reminded of a bit of research I did when Geoff's wonderful search engine first materialised, it was here: http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/geoffs-search-engine/12597-geoffs-search-engine-ww2.html See posting No.26 Best regards and thanks again for your input.
