Capt Bill Firstly, many thanks for your contribution to this fascinating thread. As you may have realised by now, once your contribution was made, my work started, but I just had to had to stop for a minute to draw the attention of forum members to something to which you have just drawn my attention. I am referring to the Smollan brothers, Harold, Dennis & Joshua. In 1943 Dennis, in the RAFVR at the age of 21, was killed and is buried at Hazelrigg Jewish Cemetery In 1944 Joshua, in the RAFVR at the age of 29, was killed and is buried at Becklingham War Cemetery In 1945 Harold, in the West Yorkshire Rgt at the age of 19, was killed and is commemorated on the Malta Memorial. As someone who saw how devastated his parents were at the loss of one of their sons in the RAF, I simply can't begin to visualise the feelings of the Smollan boy's parents when they had to face loosing three of their sons in three sucessive years. What a terrible price to pay for the ultimate victory ! Lest we forget. Ron
