I hope these shots are of use - taken in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia recently. Corporal POLLOCK, HARRY N77644 Australian Army Pay Corps born 21 Sep 1893 in SEVEN HILLS, ENGLAND. Enlisted 20 Aug 1940 died 13 Nov 1946 / discharged 11 Oct 1944 (info from the WW2 nominal roll). His headstone states that he was in the infantry. Cause of death from the AWM ROH is illness. His pers file has not been digitised by the NAA. Photo in the AWM collection shows him having a smoke while watching a game of Chinese Checkers. His rank at the time is given as Staff Sergeant Permalink: 063525 | Australian War Memorial Description HAY, NSW. 1944-01-18. A GAME OF CHINESE CHECKERS DRAWS AN AUDIENCE AT THE SERGEANTS MESS OF THE 16TH GARRISON BATTALION PRISONER OF WAR DETENTION CAMP. IDENTIFIED PERSONNEL ARE: N245561 SERGEANT A. R. His CWGC entry makes sense compared to the AWM photo - "A.C.M.F. 7th P.W. Guard Coy"
Private DENISON, JOHN VX55729 Australian Army born 24 Nov 1904 in ROUMANIA. Enlisted 13 May 1941 died 14 Sep 1941 (info from the WW2 nominal roll) Extra info from the AWM ROH – Actual rank was Trooper and he was with 8 Armoured Regiment. His entry on the on-line ROH unusually has a space in the middle of his service number, so I didn’t locate him at first – then searched by surname……. No cause of death on his ROH entry and his pers file has not been digitised by the NAA. The newspapers of the day show that he died when he fell from a Sydney ferry and drowned. He is buried in the Botany cemetery (Eastern Suburbs cemetery). His headstone reads: ONE OF MANY A VICTIM OF DICTATORSHIP AND PERSECUTION NEVER FORGOTTEN
