Dear All If anyone can assist in obtaining pictures from the listed cemeteries/churchyards I would be most grateful. These are now the last of my 'Airborne' chaps required. Some are unlikely to ever be obtained, such as those from Iraq, but I live in hope. Having had a lesss than friutful couple of days searching for Headstones for Andy, I have a question, if a name is on the CWGC website does it follow it will have a CWGC headstone? The answer is-not always! If the family did not want a CWGC headstone then the grave didnt get one, I also have had a fair number of wanderings around graveyards/cemeteries trying to find some of my chaps, and others! Sometimes I get some strnage looks, once I have even been stopped by a friendly policeman (yes there are still some!) If I cant find them after about an hour I usually try and find member of staff if there are any, most are quite helpful! Thanks for looking for me Andy PS. Sometimes there might not even be a headstone at all!
Having had a lesss than friutful couple of days searching for Headstones for Andy, I have a question, if a name is on the CWGC website does it follow it will have a CWGC headstone? Indeed I have had few searches. Andy is quite right not all have the standard CWGC headstone and as Andy states there might not be a headstone just a bare plot or the grave is in a state of disrepair. The way I approach it : 1 Look for a map on the CWGC and print off /write down locations 2 if map not available go to Cem and search for a notice board. They sometimes have a map. Also most cems have posts/notice boards in each plot area . 3 If no map look for the cem site office ,most are open from 9am till 4pm perhaps later in the summer. They will provide map.If cem is smaller and without office go to main town cem and they will give you maps of cems they cover. They are always very helpful. If cem is a Church you might need to speak to the Church office. 4 A lot of the standard graves have plot/row and grave number etched on the grave or monument( sometimes difficult to see but once you spot one you will know where to look next time) this can sometimes give you your bearings. 5 Do look out ,some are family plots with a number of names on and I have seen the CWGC stone laid flat within the plot with other family members or the War Casualty remembered on the family headstone. There are a number of examples with the WW2Talk War Grave Photo thread which will give you an idea of some of the combinations that can be found. hope this helps PS: I think I need to get out more
