Air Raid Warden documents

My grandparents were both Air Raid Wardens before the war started, and my Grandmother continued to work as one while my Grandfather went to the front.

I have inherited about a thousand documents from them I am scanning and putting online. A good chunk of them are letters from my Grandmother describing life at home in London and Kent.

I have done all the scanning and am now putting things online and transcribing the text. The first few are already visible and include stuff like this - my Grandfathers Air Warden certificate.

    June 27th, 1938 – Electranyx

The much prettier one my Grandmother got (along with a letter of apology for its belatedness)

    January 12th, 1939 – Electranyx

...and various other documents as well as letters.

Please take a look. I will update here as I get things online. I hope to provide some useful material to the community, and learn something from you experts about my own family story.

Fascinating .. Brilliant work ...Thank You
We find it of personal interest as my father-in-law joined the RA TA in April 1939 and your documents give insights which we do not have - although we also have a wonderful document archive - some of which we share on another thread (4th Durham Survey Regiment RA TA).

Also the personal letters are of interest - particularly the impact of overseas service on families

    Many thanks

A warm welcome to you and thank you for sharing these with us, fantastic.

Not long ago I started my own thread here with my own grandfather’s letters from the BEF. Sadly I don’t have my grandmother’s letters to him, but I am just happy to have any letters at all from that time.

A letter home from the BEF

FYI - I have just added comments to every page in the letters archive. They are now active on all the letters published so far. Please feel free to leave your mark (NB. comments will be moderated by me to prevent spam and abuse so don’t fret if they don’t appear instantly).

It’s a bit of an experiment so if no one is interested I may shut them down. However I think it may be fun to see people’s feedback in-situ, and make finding conversations about content easier than bouncing between two places.

I will continue to post here, nothing in that regard will change. It’s just another place to speak, which should be especially useful for anyone reading everything and piecing together the story.

I have additional plans for making things easier to navigate. Thanks once again for all your help so far.
