Air Raid shelter ,Ruislip,Middlesex situated Ruislip nw London approx 1 mile from RAF Northolt approx 30 feet long 12 feet width 9 feet high 1 door covered with steel
'Evening, The brick is pretty generic but not London yellow. The concrete slab for the roof is pre 1950s, with all those coarse aggregate inclusions. I've seen similar coarse concrete on buildings built between c 1905 and 1940, which isn't very helpful, unfortunately. The form doesn't appear to be a common military type and the rather thin slab roof strongly suggests not a defensive structure. At a guess, perhaps some sort of bulding associated with infrastructure (electricity, water, ?railway). Is it located near a modern electricity sub-station or anything similar? A location, grid ref or postcode would be helpful: we can then check it against historic OS mapping. That's my tuppence-worth, anyhow. CS
thanks CS the park its in (the building is in a thicket) was used to house prisoners of war in tents https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/51°34'06.0"N+0°23'18.4"W/@51.568332,-0.3889832,19z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d51.568332!4d-0.388436 regards Clive
Hello Clive, I'll check it tomorrow with the OS maps. I'm pretty sure English Heritage published a list of PoW camps a few years ago; might be online somewhere. CS
Clive, looking at the image names is it Roxbourne Nature Reserve, they talk of an old air raid shelter? Roxbourne Rough local nature reserve As CS says, have you an exact location? Edit. OK just seen your latest.
From this site: Edith's Streets: Yeading Brook South Ruislip "Yeading Avenue Field End Recreation Ground. On a path off at the end the Venturers Boy’s Club included a war time air raid shelter part of which was underground."
Thanks for your input the building is in the large green area adjacent to Roxbourne park and close to the road but it does look like a possible air raid shelter or possible wash rooms for the pow during the war
'Evening, The building at https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/51°34'06.0"N+0°23'18.4"W/@51.568332,-0.3889832,19z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d51.568332!4d-0.388436 is not shown on the OS 25 inch map for 1935 but is shown on later OS mapping from the 1960s. So, probably 1940s then. CS
Blimey, that's a blast from the past. I used play in that shelter when I was a nipper! Field End Road opposite the primary school right? Lee
Good to know it's still around. There wasn't much graffiti on it in the early 1980s, but a homeless person did move in and we kept away after that.
Well I must say when i first visited it there was an opening and it did stink like a urinal and was inhabited possibly by a hobbit
