    412348 Flight Sergeant SPENCER,Arthur Robert

    Source:

    Aircraft Type: Spitfire
    Serial number: BL 295
    Radio call sign:
    Unit: ATTD 165 SQN RAF

    Summary:

Spitfire BL295 crashed 1.5miles north of the Bridge of Don, Aberdeenshire, at 1900
hours on 6th June 1943, during a non-operational Reflex test and the pilot was killed.
The pilot successfully completed a Reflex Test. He then joined up with two other aircraft
and made Cine Gun attacks on them and then broke away and appeared to be chasing
another aircraft which was flying very low. BL295 apparently went down too low and the
starboard wing struck a tree and the aircraft disintegrated.
An inspection of the aircraft disclosed that both undercarriages and flaps were in the up
position, the cockpit hood was closed, and the throttle half open with the propeller in
coarse pitch. This was considered insufficient evidence to prove that the pilot was
attempting to make a forced landing.
In his remarks the Squadron Commander stated :” The accident apparently occurred due
to the pilot carrying out low flying when not authorised to do so. All pilots have been
warned of the consequences of disobeying the order”

The Wg Cdr Station Commander, RAF Station Peterhood stated “ A case of unauthorised
    low flying.”.

420057 Sergeant RICKETTS, Robert Joseph Prior

    Source:

    AWM 237 (65) NAA : A705, 166/35/79 Commonwealth War Graves records
    Aircraft Type: Spitfire
    Serial number: X 4241
    Radio call sign:
    Unit: 58 Op Training RAF

    Summary:

On the 10th June 1943, Spitfire X4241 from RAF Grangemouth, took off at 1520 hours,
detailed to carry out a cross country flight. The weather must have deteriorated for at
1607 hours an R/T from the Pilot asked for a course to steer home. The aircraft was then
at 9000 feet. This was probably above cloud and out of sight of land.
The Pilot was given a course to steer and at 1610 hours he reported he was steering the
course and at 8000 feet. The aircraft must have started losing height because at 1614
hours he reported he was flying in cloud at 3000 feet, and was told not to go below that
height as the hills were 2300 feet high. However his R/T went off and at 1617 hours the
    aircraft hit the ground.
The aircraft was found at 200 feet height about 400 yards from the summit of a hill, about
4 miles north of Alloa in Stirlingshire, and only about 12 miles from the drome. The Pilot
    had been killed.

    421491 Sergeant McDONALD, Donald Sylvester

    Source:

    AWM 237 (65) NAA : A705, 166/26/152 Commonwealth War Graves records
    Aircraft Type: Beaufort
    Serial number: DW 923
    Radio call sign:
Unit: NO 1 TORPEDO TRAINING UNIT RAF

    Summary:

Beaufort DW923 was detailed on 14th June 1943 to carry out non operational day training
exercise. During the exercise the aircraft crashed at 1118 hours in the Firth of Clyde,
Scotland 1.5 miles from the Turnberry Light, and all the crew were killed.
The accident occurred in the morning during attacks on a target ship. The aircraft was
flying approx north so that the sun was roughly behind it giving no glare off the water.
The aircraft was pulling up and began to turn to starboard after attacking the ship. The
plume of black smoke observed from the port engine was probably due to violent opening
of the throttle or throttles. Recovery from any unusual condition would be difficult at the
low height at which the aircraft was flying.
It was concluded that the pilot, being comparatively inexperienced in both low flying
over the sea and the type, in some way pulled the aircraft up to or near the stalling
condition during the turn; realising this he opened both throttles violently, at the same
time putting the nose down., Being at such a low altitude the aircraft hit the sea.

    Summary:

On the 16th July 1943, Hudson FK571 took off from RAF Station Defford at 0925 hours,
detailed to carry out a local test flight. PO Slaughter was flying the aircraft, and at 1008
hours it crashed north of the adjoining village of Ashton Under Hill, 7.5 miles from RAF
Defford. The aircraft was completely burnt out and both the occupants were killed.
The aircraft was seen by eyewitnesses to approach Ashton Under Hill, and it was seen
that the starboard propeller had stopped, and the port propeller was revolving very
slowly. The port propeller then stopped altogether, and the aircraft stalled at approx 1000
feet and spun to the left completing one and a half turns in spin before crashing.
Sqn Ldr Meade the 2nd Pilot was gaining air experience on the aircraft type and he was to
take the aircraft up afterwards on his first solo flight in the aircraft type.
The Primary cause of the accident was the failure of the starboard engine.
The Secondary cause was the inadvertent feathering of the port propeller and loss of
control when attempting to trim the aircraft prior to carrying out a forced landing.

    Crew:

RAAF 404434 PO Slaughter, A J Captain (Pilot)
RAF Sqn Ldr Meade, J A (2nd Pilot)

PO Slaughter is buried in the East Wemyss Cemetery, UK.
Sqn Ldr Meade is buried in the Pershore Cemetery, UK.

Wartime Aircrash in Ashton under Hill

At 0952 on the morning of Friday 16th July 1943, a Lockheed Hudson MkIV FK571 took off from RAF Defford, near Pershore, Worcs. The plane was piloted by 39240 Squadron Leader J.A.Mead DFC, RAF, and 404434 P/O A.J.Slaughter, RAAF, aged 25.

According to the investigating officer, a malfunction of the starboard engine occurred and in attempting to feather the Starboard propellor, the pilot inadvertently feathered the Port prop instead. The plane was now unable to maintain height due to the loss of power and the pilot closed the throttles for a forced landing. The Starboard engine then seized, and while trimming the aircraft it stalled, went into a spin and hit the ground at around 1008.

The site of the crash is at O/S map reference 999.389, which is farmland on the lower slopes of Bredon Hill, to the west of Elmley Road at the northern end of Ashton under Hill, opposite the modern building of Bredon Hill Middle School.

Details of this incident and many others in the Vale of Evesham during World War II can be found in 'Angry Skies across the Vale' by Brian Kedward, pub 1998.
