    Summary:

Hampden P2145 took off from RAF Crail at 1030 hours on the 16 July 1942 in
formation with other aircraft to carry out dummy torpedo runs on a target ship. During
these exercises the port engine of P2145 gave indications of failing and the aircraft
broke formation with the intention of returning to base. On the way back the engine
picked up and appeared to function normally but approaching the landing strip the
engine failed again. The pilot lowered the flaps and wheels hydraulically to avoid
damaging the aircraft by belly landing, but was unable to maintain height, and the
    aircraft stalled and spun in.

    Aircraft Type: Blenheim V

    Crew:

RAAF 406626 Sergeant RUTHERFORD, Thomas Alan (Pilot)
    RAF 1417381 Sgt Kidd, J C (Observer)

    Summary:

On the 14th August 1942, Sgt Rutherford, a Pilot, was killed in an aircraft accident. There
is no other information on the above NAA file held by archives.
He is buried in the Duns Cemetery, UK.

Most of the detail for Rutherford's accident can be gleaned from the No.54 OTU ORB.

"Normal flying training. There was a fatal flying accident during the day. A Blenheim aircraft piloted by No. Aus. 406626 Sgt Rutherford, T A, struck a tree shortly after take off at Charter Hall. The aircraft was completely destroyed, and both the pilot and his observer No.1417381 Sgt Kidd, J C were killed."

Using the short cut of "Warner: The Bristol Blenheim, A complete history" gives a serial for the Blenheim of BA192.

    More information:
    RAAF: Duns

Sgt Rutherford of 54 OTU was killed when his Blenheim V struck trees during a night take off from RAF Charterhall and crashed on farm ground, about 1 mile S of the airfield.

54 was a night fighter OTU, with such a high casualty rate that Charterhall was known in the RAF as Slaughterhouse. There are only two 54 OTU burials at Duns (the other is RCAF) because, shortly after Sgt Rutherford’s death, a CWGC plot was set up at Fogo, a few miles away (where there are several RAAF graves, which I guess you have photos of).

Rutherford is a surname which originated in this locality (‘the Borders’), so it is possible that Sgt Rutherford’s ancestors emigrated from near where he died.

    Summary:

On the 18th August 1942, Hampden AE255 crashed when taking off on a solo night
practice flight. AE55 crashed one quarter of a mile south of Turnberry, Ayrshire,
Scotland, and all on board were killed. Edit: Sgt Ryan was injured.

    Crew:

RAAF 401610 Sgt B de S Burns, (Pilot)
    RNZAF Sgt J M Ryan, (Wireless Operator)(injured)

    Edit: Further information.

Ryan was injured in the crash.

Sgt Ryan was killed on operations 14/04/43 when Hampden P1151 of No.415 Sqn was shot down.
Later investigation of the accident stated that “the cause of the accident was obscure. The
elevator trim tabs were in the up position, which would tend to make the aircraft nose
heavy. The position of the trimmer tabs may have been due to the crash on impact. The
wheel in the cockpit showed the pointer at zero the correct position of the tabs for take
off. The aircraft struck the ground at a flat angle and in fact almost horizontal.”
Sgt Burns is buried in the Dunure Cemetery, UK.

The Duke of Kent is buried in the Frogmore Royal Burial Ground, UK. The Duke of
Kent is the fourth son of HM King George V and Queen Mary, and the husband of HRH
the Duchess of Kent. The family name of the Duke of Kent is Windsor, Christian names

A Court of Inquiry into the accident convened at Invergordon on 28/8/1942, was chaired
by AVM D Colyer, CB, DFC.
The Findings of the Court were : “The cause of the accident was in our opinion due to the
aircraft being flown on a wrong track at too low an altitude to clear the rising ground on
the track. The responsibility for this serious mistake in airmanship lies with the Captain
of the aircraft Flt Lt Goyen, who changed his flight plan for reasons unknown, was such
that he commenced the flight by climbing into cloud and then started to descend but
failed to take the elementary precaution of making sure that he was over the water and
crashed into a hillside while still in cloud. In our opinion the weather encountered should
have presented no difficulties to an experienced pilot. The examination of the propellers
showed that the engines were under power when the aircraft struck the ground.”
In his remarks the Group Captain RAF Station Oban stated :“I concur in the findings of
the Court as to the actual cause of the accident, but I am of the opinion that, in the
weather conditions pertaining at the time, a non operational flight should not have been
    carried out.
The AVM Group Commander commanding No 15 Group stated “ I concur with the
findings of the Court, and consider the weather conditions should have presented no
difficulty to a crew of such experience.”
The survivor Flt Sgt Jack in his evidence to the inquiry stated “ Flt Lt Goyen told us over
the inter-com that there would be a, lot of cloud about but he did not think it would last
long. I was in the rear turret. As we proceeded the cloud became thicker. I felt the aircraft
losing height after about 20 minutes. The pilot was apparently trying to get under the
cloud base. I don’t remember anything after that “
The Medical officer at RAF Wick stated “ I was informed by Flying Control at about
1430 hours on 25/8/42 that there had probably been an accident in the region of Scaraben.
A Sub Lt of the RNVR stated “ I am Watch Keeping officer at RNO Wick, and was
fishing near Berriedale River to the west of Eagles Rock. A few minutes later I heard an
aircraft approaching from the sea. It was impossible to see the aircraft but from the sound
it appeared to be very low, so low indeed that I half expected it to crash. Immediately
after this I heard a dull thud and the sounds of the engines ceased, and I assumed the
aircraft had crashed. I packed up my fishing tackle and proceeded towards Braemore.
Owing to the thick mist it was not until 1630 hours that we came upon the scene of the
accident. I was accompanied by three shepherds. We were the first to find the crash and
made a further search to see if there were any survivors. None were found. “

    Hi Geoff,

Bowery RCAF was shot down by USN F4Fs off Casablanca in Hudson V8985 so you need to adjust the commeoration data.

Also the Liberator was AL624 not AI-624
