Obviously every death in Afghanistan is a great loss to our country, this is a very poignant story of one soldier and his dog Expert dog handler killed in Afghanistan saved 'countless lives' - Telegraph Ministry of Defence | Defence News | Military Operations | Lance Corporal Liam Richard Tasker killed in Afghanistan
This story made the 4pm news broadcast down here. A great combination who did so much good for their comrades. The way the explosive detecting dog died, is very sad news. Guess it is another example that shows just how close Handler and Dog are
The RAVC is a very small family. One of my friends who I trained to join thr Reg Army after she failed her fitness test is in the RAVC as a dog handler has just come back from 'Stan, she is beside herself at the loss of such a good friend. The loss of any soldier is always sad but even more so when their primary role is non-fighting. L/Cpl Tasker, who was attached to the 1st Battalion Irish Guards, was shot and died from his injuries. Theo was taken back to Camp Bastion but later died due to stress from the shooting, an MoD spokesman said. It just goes to show the devotion the dogs have for their handlers-The Army lost two soldiers that day.
Drew, Did you get the book? Not that I'm aware of mate-I don't think I've bought or received a book this year.
I usually look at these posts and think "poor bloke", and move on, but this one really makes me think a bit. I train dogs and their handlers to do work in the customs dept. The amount of work and effort a handler has to put in is immense. You have to concentrate on the dog the whole time. The photo in the link provided was a perfect example of a working dog enjoying what he was doing, and a handler looking proudly at the dog. In a war situation you not only have to concentrate on the dog, but the surrounding environment as well.
I've just suggested to Katy that she might want to consider a book about their partnership and donate the royalties to Help for Heroes.
'The pair's successes at uncovering so many explosions and weapons had resulted in their tour of Afghanistan being extended by a month.' How ironic is that. RIP the both of you.
I am with my 3rd Jack Russell bitch and I know how a good dog and a man can mean so much to each other .I am at a loss when without a dog ,it was a sad day .But they did a fantastic job .
