Advice needed, Netherlands East Indies Books

Lads, I need advice on the following subject:

A relative of mine is going across the pond early next month, and as soon as I found out, I began pestering him with the mission of bringing back a pair of books for me.

Problem is, I am operating on a rather tight budget, so, out of 3 titles that I am interested in about the NEI 1941-42 campaign, I can only go for 2, and here is where I need recomendations as to which ones to choose:

    1) Aircraft of the Netherlands East Indies Army Air Corps: February 1937 – June 1942, by P.C. Boer
    2) The battle for Palembang: 14-15 February 1942, same author
    3) Forlorn Hope, by G. Jungslager

Taking into consideration the facts that together with several books covering operations by the rest of the ABDA forces, about the KNIL I already own The Loss of Java, also by Dr. Boer, and that if need be, I can resort to the secret fund to get the 50EUR that Jungslager's holy grail would take.

    Please help

There would be only one choice for me.

Bite the bullet, make the investment (for investment it is!)

    Forlorn Hope, by G. Jungslager.

    Good luck.

    Kind regards, always,

    Jim.

In fact, after receiving a lot of flak, I can (and will) go for Jungslager's and another one, so if you or someone else can give me a recommendation about any of the other two, I will greatly appreciate it. Have always been an almost delirious fan of the Palembang action, but the thought of individual histories for any ML-KNIL type 37-42 is also very alluring...

Ask TijgerB, his focus is the NEI and he was last here a few weeks ago.

I have all the books. It depends on how wide or narrow is your interest. Only the Forlorn Hope and the Aircraft of the NEI cover the entire time-period of the campaign. Forlorn Hope covers land, sea, and air; Aircraft NEI only covers the air campaign. Boer's Palembang is a detailed account of that one battle.

Forlorn Hope appears to be the most difficult book to acquire (although I had no trouble ordering from Batavian Lion from the US). I see Aircraft and Palembang as niche topics to complement an already robust NEI collection.

You will find that the maps (actually I should call them sketches) in Forlorn Hope complement Boer's Java quite well which suffers from a lack of maps. In fact, Forlorn Hope has more maps that cover the tactical actions that are superior to those found in vol. 7 De strijd op Java in the official history Nederlands-Indïe contra Japan (which has no maps covering the tactical actions).

For me, Forlorn Hope is the base volume one will look at first when beginning research to get the feel in time and activity. After that, one would then dig into the specialized volumes as need. I would get Forlorn Hope even if it means buying only that one book at this time.

Mate, can I PM you about the administrative details of ordering from Batavian Lion? Already sent them an e-mail, but no answer so far.

No need to use PM. Note I purchased my copy a few years ago.

When you say you sent an email, did you use the link on the Forlorn Hope page in their catalog? If you didn't, go to their webpage (De Bataafsche Leeuw - Uitgeverij Van Soeren & Co) and click the assortiment button. Find and click the Internationaal button. The book is at the very bottom of the page. Click on the book then the bestel dit boek button. Fill out the form and send. If you already did this, then there is little else I can offer. IIRC it was postage that was the issue for you.

I just checked an online Dutch used book market I use and they have two copies of the book listed for €100 and €120 each. Bookfinder is similar with prices starting at $133 but it appears they are the same sellers. I don't know if that implies that the book is out of print.

Yes, I sent the email through the link on their Website (bottom right). What puzzles me is that, according to the automatic translator, delivery is free of charge, something I know is not possible, at least internationally.

They have it listed as available (few units left) at 49.50EUR, which is my only hope. Anything above that would ruin my already tight budget.

Bottom right? The website address bar doesn't give the individual page URL, that is why I gave directions. Try navigating to the book listing as I described. Find this page. Use the bestel dit boek button to send your query. The status is listed as almost sold out. They will contact you on total cost and how to pay.

    I used this address:

Now, you mean that filling all the fields in the product page results in just a query? I was afraid that by doing so, I would be completing the actual purchase, without knowing about S+H and any other extras.

Filling that in is only a query, it doesn't commit you to buy. Note you don't enter any payment information.

Thank you, mate. The lack of payment information is exactly what puzzled me, but now I have a much clearer picture, and will proceed accordingly.

Sorry for showing up late :bandit:

I am running surveillance on a book of my own. As it will be one of the most expensive books in my library:omg:

When it comes to recommendations with your family past "The Battle For Palembang" could be a must. But I think you got it for free before it was deleated on Academica. I got my sample from France second hand:wacko:

Actually it is the only of those books I have in my library. "Forlorn Hope" I never heard of. But from the rest of you gentlemen it sounds like it is worth a buy:cheers:

The "Loss of Java" escaped me as i found too spicey in price. I have J. J. Nortiers books which cover the period for me.

From the four mentioned I will say "The Loss of Java" and "Forlorn Hope" then:cheers:
