The forum 'Women of WW 2' is headed by the advertisements shown below. I am not one for 'political correctness', but this seems to me to be most inappropriate in a forum dealing with the bravery and sacrifice of women during the war.

We don't have any control over the content of these adverts. They are set up to be as WW2 related as possible, but sometimes this goes amiss.

The brutal reality is they help pay the bills for this site so that members like yourself are not asked for any contribution save your own valuable input that helps make the forum tick.

Adverts? Never knew there were any!

Might I suggest you investigate using AdBlock Plus? Free prog which plugs into your browser - comes with a default list of advert sources which you can customise to your heart's content. You need never see another advert again - it also blocks 99.99999% of pop-ups.

We do have ads and most of them are appropriate and WWII related. I just ignore the "diet" related one that keeps popping up. :D
Paul's right, they pay the bills.

Wouldn't the pop up blocker remove the ability to
view user images posted to the thread as well?

Paul makes the obvious point and, also, I too
never even notice the adverts to be honest!

I keep getting spam advertising, its either impotence pills or a cure for baldness.

    How do they know?

Anyone tried the Moldovan one, Ukrainians all got standards higher than me I'm afraid.....

No, because it blocks whole domain names of known adservers like doubleclick and/or extensions like .com/ad. I've just checked my system and it has blocked a total of 23262 adverts from just one extension! Blocking things like doubleclick and revsci also has the advantage of substantially cutting down on the number of tracking cookies you pick up.

These headings change throughout the day.

This is what is there now.

It seems a small price to pay if it helps pay/Subsidize for the sites running.

The adverts are only a small band across the top and it is only the ones with music that annoy me personally.

I don't get any popups at all, and I follow WhiskeyGolf's advice: I ignore the diet ones. As for single Catholics, being a divorced Catholic I'm supposed to be out of the game :D

If you had given some money to someone who knew someone in the local Rota (eclesiastical tribunal),they would have disbanded your marriage.
    Money works wonders :D

Can I just say in passing - there are no popups on this site (other than Private Message Notifications).
If anyone gets 'em here - scan your pooter for Malware.

yes you can get a Catholic marriage annulled (or get a divorce), but you are then person non grata, can never have communion again and I believe excommunicated!!!!

Being a divorced Catholic I don't go to church much these days lol. Then they wonder why the church attendance is going down!! they need to wake up & smell the roses.

Just opened up that forum and got an ad for a 'near perfect machine'. (but I think it was selling me a PC ).

It seems to pick up keywords from the page you are viewing. I suspect cookies are also used, as last week I checked on line to see what one of my old bangers (automobile) was worth, and got relevant ads for the next few days.

Nicola you need to come down this end of the world - we have more Catholics attending services at the Anglican church than the Catholic church has!

Belville, sometimes adverts are targeted on the basis of your browser history. Have you been to......?

    I think so!

I booked a car through here with Argus Car Hire and it now follows me around the threads.

Bloody good price though. GBP215 for 10 days everything included - No Extras - No Fees - No Taxes - Unlimited Mileage - Collision Waver - Damage Waver - Theft Waver - No excess.

This hire encompasses Easter Weekend as well. Pick up at Stansted Airport when I leave London then off to my nephews at Southend.

I think that both your assumptions I correct. I support Hearts, the Scottish football team, and lonely hearts ads often appear on its supporters' forum. Sometimes when another club is being discussed, usually in derogatory terms, ads for its merchandise or match tickets will be shown.

I recently booked a hotel in Richmond for a trip to the National Archives in Kew. A couple of other websites that I've visited subsequently displayed ads hotels in Richmond.

The most inappropriate advert that I've seen was one for motor engine spare parts on a website that described how some Nazi death camps used the carbon monoxide produced by motor engines to murder Jews.

    Here's how it works:

What are tracking cookies on my computer? - Computeractive - PC help

Last week's "Click" computer broadcast on BBC News also examined tracking cookies and how they are being used by advertisers to avoid advertising rules designed to protect children. Although, as the article above makes clear, they are merely text files and nearly always harmless you can pick up hundreds or even thousands: ultimately they can take up quite a bit of memory!
