    Hi,

    242 Squadron was equipped with Hurricane II’s.


    The orb of this Squadron (AIR27/1471) mentions :

    Form 540 : Dawn Patrol. S/Ldr.Wells carried out Army Co-Operation patrol. “ R “ Boats attacked off Gravelines, two being badly damaged & 1 set on fire.P/O.Quilliam missing.

    Form 541 : Z4001 P/O.Guilliam attack on shipping t/o 13.55 , missing.

    Wellington III DF673AA was shot down by a German night fighter in the area of Moerbeke-Waas, Belgium. The aircraft was on the returning flight from a bombardment on Nurnberg, Germany.

    The crew was temporary buried in Moerbeke, Belgium.

    September 1, 1941: MCADAM, WILLIAM DAVID (age 26). United Kingdom. Flight Sergeant (Air Gunner) (519802). Royal Air Force, 23 Sqdn. Plot 3, Row AB, Grave 4.
    William David McAdam, from Grangemouth, Stirlingshire joined the RAF in April 1935 as an Aircrafthand but later remustered as an Air Gunner. After training he was posted to 23 Squadron operating Blenheims at Collyweston in early July 1940.
    He served with 23 Squadron throughout the Battle of Britain and was still with them in August 1941. On the night of 31st August/1st September he was aboard Havoc I AW404 on a night intruder mission to Gilze-Rijen in Holland. The aircraft was hit by flak in the vicinity of Haamstede and came down on a sandbank near Schouwen.
    The pilot, F/O DA Thomas, baled out and was made PoW. Of the other crew Sgt. RS Bryer was never found and McAdam’s body was washed ashore, initially buried at Zeebrugge, Belgium.

    Hi,

    Sgt.Taylor was the navigator of Hampden I AD726 of 44 Squadron.

    The orb of the Squadron (AIR27/448) mentions :

    Form 540 : Operations. Ten Hampdens from this Squadron were detailed to attack the town of Cologne. Six reached the target area and dropped five 1000 lb, twelve 500 lb and two 250 lb bombs. Total 11,500 lbs, Within the target area. Bombs burst were observed and numberous fires were seen burning in the town. Participating in this operation were 110 aircraft from other Groups and Stations.



    It is not know if the fourth – Hampden AD726, piloted by Sergeant Harvey reached the target area. As at 00.30 hours, a signal was received from the aircraft that he had lost height and was falling into the sea, the ‘fix’ was given as 52°06’N 02°11’E. The aircraft flew for approximately 16 minutes after, and then there was complete silence. The assistance of the Sea Rescue Organisation was immediately sort, and in addition, aircraft carried out a continuous search throughout the day but the crew were not located and therefore presumed ‘ missing ‘. This crew was as follows :

    Details of Sortie or Flight : Aircraft crashed in sea. Reports not yet available.

    Sgt. Harvey and F/Sgt.Phillips are still missing and are mentioned on the Runnymede Memorial. Sgt. Hayes is buried at Oostduinkerke Communal Cemetery.

    F/Sgt Bertram, from Grimsby, Ontario, was the pilot of Wellington BJ987 from No. 25 OTU, shot down near Nieuwpoort, Belgium and crashed into the sea. All crew lost.

    Hi,

    F/Sgt.Bertram was the pilot of Wellington III BJ987 of 25 OTU which crashed in the sea during a mission to Dusseldorf.
