WHITTINGHAM, JESSE | Canadian War Cemetery, Adegem

The 17th Duke of York's Royal Canadian Hussars (7th Reconnaissance Regiment, 7th RECCE) war diary reports on October 26, 1944: "A" Squadron using the Assault Troop was to proceed from grid line (00) towards Oostburg, Netherlands and "B" Squadron using 2 Troops were to proceed from Oostburg in a south westerly direction and join up with "A". "A" Squadron was able to do their task without too much difficulty and soon reached the site where the bridge was to be erected. "B" Squadron on the other hand had to cross a river over a foot bridge and continue to "C" Squadron where they were lent vehicles to enable them to maintain communications. Their first job was to remove a road block at "C" Squadron and the Queen's Own Rifles junction point 042107 (Bakkersstraat and Nieuveltweg, Oostburg). As this was being removed, Capt Whittingham's vehicle, a light Scout car, ran over a mine and he was blasted completely out of the car. A second mine exploded and turned the car over on him. He was killed instantly. Captain J.O. MacArthur was immediately sent to take command and proceeded down the main road towards "A" Squadron meeting heavy opposition in the way of mines, booby traps and enemy mortar and shell fire. He eventually linked up with "A" Squadron at last light. The number of PW's (German war prisoners) taken was 22. One 37mm gun was destroyed.

The 17th Duke of York's Royal Canadian Hussars (7th Reconnaissance Regiment, 7th RECCE) war diary reports on October 27, 1944: Major W.C. Bowen accompanied Captain Whittingham's body for burial to Maldegem, Belgium - in the same cemetery as Lieutenant-Colonel T.C. Lewis (October 17, 1944 17th Duke of York's Royal Canadian Hussars) was buried. Representatives from all Squadron attended.

On 30 October 1944, #9 Platoon of A Company of the Regina Rifles were in position along a dyke road north of Cadzand, Holland. During the afternoon, the forward section of the Platoon was bombed by a lone Lancaster that dropped a single stick of bombs. A building sheltering several men of the section was razed and a rescue party was able to dig out at least two men. The remaining four men of the section had been digging slit trenches in front of the building and were buried under tons of mud and debris.

I have confirmed that three of the dead were:

    Rfn PA McCormack

    Rfn JH Munn

Rfn JWJ Sweeney (officially KIA 2 Nov 1944)

To date, I have been unable to confirm if Gallagher or Hozempa was the fourth victim.

Thank you for brining this to our attention. I was aware of this story and I know Frank in person. What a terrible event, just before the Allies had the Germans to surrender in this area.

    Boston III Z2179
In the late afternoon of 31 October seventeen Bostons on 88 and 107 Squadrons headed for power station in the area of Rijsel and Bethune, France. Four Bostons flew to Mazingarbe, four to Gosnay, six to Pont-a-Vendin and three to Comines. ...Henry Collings headed for Pont-a-Vendin. Simpson (other aircraft) could not find his target so he dropped his bombs on an alternative. Collings did the same before, over Jonkershove his Boston was picked up by two incoming FW 190s of 8/JG26 (Focke Wulf - German fighters) from Wevelgem-Kortijk, Belgium. Leutnant Paul Galland (one of two younger brothers of Adolph) was flying the leading fighter and his wingman was probably Oberfeldwebel Johann Edman. They attacked as soon as the Boston came within range. Stanley Nash and Francis Pickering, the two air gunners, returned fire but shells from Galland's guns set the aircraft on fire. The other crew member was Ronald Tebbutt, the 32-year-old navigator. The Boston touched down, flipped over amongst some willow trees and carried on through a field before exploding. One of the crew members was still alive but he died shortly afterwards. The wreckage was spread for hundreds of yards. It was Paul Galland's seventeenth victory and his last. Five hours later he was killed when he was shot down into the sea by a Spitfire while returning from an escort mission for the bombers to Canterbury. Edman, who then dispatched the Spitfire, was himself shot down and killed on 21 March 1944, by which time he had five victories.
