The aircraft took off at 21.15 hrs from Feltwell, Norfolk to bomb the invasion barges moored in channel ports. The aircraft was hit by AA fire from Alpha battery sited west of Ostend. As a result of which the aircraft caught fire and crashed in flames at 23.00 hrs that evening.

The pilot and captain that night, P/O. Michael R. Braun (Austrian extraction) alone baled out and landed within the small town of Leffinge, just West of Oostende. He was severely wounded, apparently, according to locals who recall the incident, by small arms fire from the occupying forces. He died from his injuries in Oostende Hospital that same night. The other 5 crew, consisting of distressingly few physical remains, were buried in one coffin in Leffinge churchyard.

Gunner James Allan Reid (age 21) C/101820 (R.C.A.) was born in Farm Point, Quebec, Canada. He disembarked in France on July 23, 1944.

Researching his service records and the 23 Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery war diary concluded that Gunner Reid died on September 8, 1944 instead of September 7, 1944.

Commonwealth War Graves Commission confirmed these findings. Mr. Martin Skelly placed a headstone amendment request into their works programme which will be assessed by one of their works teams when they are next on site. If an amendment in situ is possible this will be carried out in due course however if a replacement stone is required this will add some time to the process.
