In the early morning of 30 July 1942 the inhabitants of the Belgian villages of Olmen and Balen were woken by a fierce air battle over the town. A German night fighter targeted a Wellington bomber of No.142 Squadron returning from a raid on Saarbrucken. The fight was finally resolved in a victory for German fighter ace Oberleutnant Eckart-Wilhelm von Bonin. The bomber crashed in a meadow near Olmen and immediately caught fire. All six crew members were killed in the crash.

Hampden Mk.I P1185 (GL-B) of 14 OTU RAF. Lost on combat operations on 1/8/1942. Missing on a raid to Düsseldorf, Germany. Took off from RAF Cottesmore, Rutland at 00:03 hrs. The aircraft crashed near the coastal municipality of Leffinge, Middelkerke, West Flanders, Belgium.
Some sources reported the Allied aircraft was shot down by night fighter Pilot Hauptmann Dr. Horst Patuschka of the 7./NJG 2, who was flying a Ju 88 C-6 from Gilze-Rijen airfield in the Netherlands. He died on March, 1943 on a mission over Tunisia in his Ju 88C-6 due to engine failure.

Three crew members were killed: two Canadians - the observer, Pilot Officer David G. McLean and the radio operator/air gunner, Flight Sgt George T. Bloomer - as well as Australian, Sgt Sydney Shailer. The third Canadian on board, the pilot Sgt N.E. McGowan, was taken prisoner of war.

Another source reports that the aircraft lost power to one of their engines above Dusseldorf, Germany and came under attack by German night fighter, killing Shailer. The battered aircraft later came under fire by German Anti Aircraft (FLAK) near the cost of Oostende, Belgium and crashed.

    AUGUST 26, 1941:
QUILLIAM, HAROLD (age 22). United Kingdom. Pilot Officer (Pilot) (31405). Royal Air Force, 242 Sqdn. Plot 3, Row AB, Grave 5.
Pilot Quilliam was on a mission flying Hurricane II Z4001. The 242 R.A.F. Squadron was sweeping the French coast line attacking German E-Boats. Harold was either shot down by FLAK (German Anti Air Craft) or during an aerial combat near Gravelines, France. Most likely his body washed ashore near Zeebrugge Belgium. Here he was temporary buried in the Churchyard.
