Actors playing THEMSELVES in war films...

The Great Escape may not be entirely accurate, but it is still one of my favorites. James Garner, another favorite of mine, played the scrounger. Garner served in the infantry in Korea, and by his own account he had that very role in his outfit--unofficial, of course.

 

Two Purple Hearts too.

 

Yep, Garner was for real. There was even a Rockford Files episode which flashed back to Jim's Korea service.
