I was a UK Royal Engineer national serviceman from 57 to 59 and reached the dizzy height of CADRE Training Cpl based at Guillemot Barracks Cove I am trying to solve a disagreement with a friend. 1 My green discharge book lists me at the end of my service as Cpl 2. A friend purchased a National Service medal - which I cannot wear - and that lists me as Cpl. 3. But my military record lists me, following the rank of al/cpl 35 days, 6 months into my service, as a/cpl 35 days. So the question is - was I acting cpl for 35 days and then, with good behaviour, automatically substantive after 35 days? If so where in the UK military regulations would I be able to find the detail? I have searched high and low to try to sort this out and a pint of beer depends on the result - and I am willing to forgo it, instead donating it to the person who can give me the answer!!! Ray Pearson.
Hi, Unless the regulations changed post war as far as I am aware - from looking at numerous WW2 era service records - after 21 days acting a promotion became permanent. Steve
You might want to have a look at the numerous service records members have posted in the Service Record sub forum and satisfy yourself on the point. Steve
Steve. Thanks but being new to the site how do I find the Service record sub form? While that would be interesting to support my point but I really need to know where to find it in some form of military regulation
Here is a link to the Service Record sub forum - just need to open the various topics. You occasionally find a reference to the Kings Regulation paragraph beside a promotion entry. Steve Search Results for Query: Service records | WW2Talk
Might be in here - Queen's Regulations for the Army 1955. WO Code 10,000 by War Office: VG Hard Cover (1955) | A & I PEDERSEN
For accessing actual uploaded records (rather than all references to them such as applications for them), Tags might be handier than simple forum search Search Tags | WW2Talk link - service records | WW2Talk unit specific - royal engineers - service records | WW2Talk royal artillery - service records | WW2Talk etc
