I've started a new WW1 Centenary project to film the WW1 battlefields using a drone. You can see the current films here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkS4FjOn5KNGTaTrCMbiIkQ/videos They are also posted with extra information here: http://ww1revisited.com/category/above-the-battlefield/
This seems like a worthwhile project, Paul. It gives an entirely different perspective of the landscape.
I wondered how much the drone cost. http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/dji-phantom-2-vision-quadcopter-drone-with-extra-battery-a43qb Maybe I wont get one though it does look fun.
I have been fascinated with helicopters for years and after a couple of flights in them it got worse. I got a cheap indoor RC (or was it IR control?) heli a couple of years ago and while the battery lasted it was great fun. Then the battery failed and I haven't bothered to replace it as I doubt a new one would last much longer. Chinese quality standards etc. The (apparently) recent availability of affordable drones with HD cameras has sporned a few TV programmes and, to be honest, the cost seems very reasonable to me if you can make some money from it. Otherwise it is just an expensive toy. Doesen't stop me wanting one though. Great project Paul, the results are stunning.
It is not easy to make money from drones. In the UK to use drones commercially you need to see an approved course which costs £2K and many other EU countries may go down this route; some already do. The insurance is also very high. That's why I have not gone down a non-commercial route and am putting all film up for free.
