Probably a long shot, but the RAC did have a 54th Training Regiment which was located at some time at Barnard Castle, but I can't locate what date it was created.

Many thanks for that, Wiki says 'from 1943' but will try and check it out. He was only there for 18 days but would be interesting to know. Thanks

    Hi all,

This seems as good a place as any to ask since it does concern abbreviations. I have the following cable from the Canadian digitized archives.

    (1) It mentions "DDEM". Has anyone come across this abbreviation before or is it a typo for "DDME", do you suppose?
    (2) I'm trying to remember the meaning of AEDB. I believe Army Engineering Design Board...? Branch? I have a bunch of dust to shake out of my head.

I wonder if anyone could help me re casualties abbreviations of X, Y, Z - this is from the 4th Welch diary - I thought that X was missing, Y wounded and Z killed but not sure. Regards

Here is a link to the 1944 unit war diary transcript posted by Swiper

War Diary: 4 Bn Welch Regiment, June - August 1944

You will see mention of XYZ casualty abbreviation at the end of post #2. The usual sequence of casualty recording is dead, wounded and finally missing.

I was wondering what 'WMB' could be an abbreviation for in the RAF?

Hi - I'm new to all this, having just got my Grandads WWII records via FOI request. Most of it is fairly clear (or should be as I work through it with the assistance of the resources here) but this abbreviation has me stumped 'RWOKF' which seems to be something to do with a draft - for example "Emb Draft RWOKF", it seems to occur at the start of service following training when leaving for overseas in late 1942

    Hi,

    Welcome to the forum.

Standard question asked and answered many times previously on the forum .

    Draft recognition codes.

It’s just a random collection of letters allocated to a unit (or mixed group) of men proceeding overseas. It was stamped on a man’s kitbag so it wouldn’t be misplaced en route.

Think of it as similar to the barcode tags attached to your luggage when you pass through an airport.

If you have any queries about the service record please start a new topic in uour subjects name and post the documents and I’m sure members will be able to assist.

Thanks Steve - there's so many bits in the forum I wasn't quite sure where to start so thanks for the pointer!

    You’re welcome.

Last year a member trawled the forum and pulled together a long list of draft codes to see if a pattern emerged. You may find your draft code listed.
