I cant find a thread that has a list of what all the Abbreviations mean If there is one and I have missed it can someone point me in the right direction. As I have said on a previous post I am new to war talk and am unsure of a lot of things but find that abbreviations seem to get me stumped for days sometime The main 2 I am looking for at the moment are MNAE and NWE. Any ideas people There are lots more but Im to tired to go looking for my list
Hi Toni, Direct link to it on the left hand side of the front page/portal. Or click here: http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/research-material/13716-abbreviations.html
Thank you Feel free to delete this thread now I will bookmark that page as I think I will be using it ALOT
I kinda figured NWE was north west Europe but MNAE has me stumped Someone suggested it could be Mediterranean, North Africa, Egypt ??
I kinda figured NWE was north west Europe but MNAE has me stumped Someone suggested it could be Mediterranean, North Africa, Egypt ?? Got me stumped there, I've seen most Abbs for the Mediterranean theatre, BNAF, CMF, ME, MELF - but never MNAE, I think I would have seen it if it was connected to the Med. theatre.
This is what it what I found in him NZ file AREA, Unit,Reg. or Corps, Dates UK Highland Light Inf 24/1/39 - 30/8/39 UK Class W.T Reserves 13/12/40 - 16/3/41 UK Recalled to Colours 17/3/41 - 16/5/42 UK Seaforth Highlands 21/5/42 - 29/8/43 MNAE 30/8/43 - 27/11/43 NWE 28/11/43 - 3/6/44 UK 22/6/44 - 12/7/46 Class Z Reserves 13/7/46 - 12/3/50 Enlisted T.A Royal Signals 13/3/50 Poppa got the Africa Star with the 8th Army clasp so done a bit of googling to find out what areas they were in still couldnt figure out MNAE Might need to make a call to England again to see if the Defence Force knows
I see: ME Seaforth Highlands 21/5/42 - 29/8/43, which would explain the Africa Star, and MANF the M could be a typo and its meant to be BNAF which is British North Africa Forces, which would make more sense. Seaforth Highlanders were part of the 51st Highland Division. I don't see how the New Zealand Army comes into it though?
He enlisted in the NZ Army in 1952 He spent 17 years 10 moths in the NZDF. Those are the records I have managed to get my hands on. The UK ones are taking there time
It could be an F not E And if it is a Typo and meant to be a B not M it would make my searching easier
Sorry, now I've made a typo, it should read 51st not 41st Highland Division. I will edit the post so as not to cause confusion.
If you start another thread about seaforth highlanders and 51st Highland Division with the corresponding dates, you will turn up lots of info.
It's an F not E. I reckon its a typo and should be BNAF-British North Africa Force Lesley ps Just to throw a spanner in the works how can it be BNAF as looking at the record it states: MNAE 30/8/43 to 27/11/43- this would have been in Italy
