First world war medals were inscribed around the edge with the name, rank, number and unit at the time of the person awarded the medal. Making them much more interesting than WW2 medals as you can trace the history of the individual. The number is particularly useful in identifying who he was. If he died in the war, try http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/search.aspx Identify the medals,if British, here http://pathsofglory.co.uk/campaign_medals_...eat_britain.htm Regds

I am not that well up on medals, so will answer your questions here. That way someone can correct me when I make a mistake. i have 2 more ww1 medals 1 is "the great war for civilisation 1914-1919" - ( Victory Medal - "Rainbow" ribbon) the other is a silver medal with a bar,the ribbon has a wideyellow stripe down the middle then thin white, black & blue, nit sure if its the "war medal" (British War Medal, but it sounds as if the ribbon has faded a bit) Both these medals state "2-Lieunt.E.F.HOWE,i pressume this soldier is a 2nd Lieutenant & his name is E.F.HOWE, (Correct) can you tell me why it does not give service number or regiment? (Officers did not have numbers in WW1, and their regiment was not put on the medals either) sorry for all the questions, but i love learning! These 5 medals were given to me by my great uncle who found them many years ago when his was a bin man,& now i am doing family history & im searching for my great grandfather & great uncle`s millitary details i look for as much information as i can to aid my learning. (I believe that there is a WW1 group similar to this. I am sure that people there can help you if you ask the questions there) regards shelley.x
