That would definitely make sense, nicely done rflory. Reading the SEMSEC report again it is all about enemy dumps and what they are planning to do with them. It says 170 tonnes of SEM has been transferred to British Depots up to 2 Dec 44. SEMSEC would therefore be the "Salvaged Enemy Material Section". Looking after SEM was the responsibility of the 3rd Infantry Corps, Counter Battery Officer (CBO) Staff (Royal Artillery), who were located in Room 51, of the Corps HQ (Metokhikon Tamion) building in central Athens. Gus
I prostrate myself before you Guys, your knowledge is boundless. Salvaged Enemy Material it is then. Fear ye not though I have not finished the story yet so in the words of the Terminator "I shall be back" Margaret
Hi Folks, said I would be back and here I am again. Diary refers to '191 LAA Battery 'B' Troop and section at Key Point 119 & 121 with 307 B.P.S.S. at Socombel works' what is that? A battery, infantry or regiment or non of the above? Thank you Margaret
It's probably a 'base petrol' or 'bulk petrol' unit, part of the petrol supply chain, but I'd need to check the SS bit.
Hi Margaret, They are all small RASC detachments dealing with the storage and issue of petrol. BPSS = Bulk Petrol Storage Section. MPFC = Mobile Petrol Filling Centre PD = Petrol Depot PBTC = Bulk Petrol Transport Company If you look at Page 291 of the history of RASC I sent you earlier they are all mentioned in the first paragraph and also on the map on P289. Regards Gus
Can anyone help with these abbreviations in my father-in-laws service record. P.O.X.II S.O.X.II S.O.X.2 He was in the Royal Engineers, in Egypt 1946 to 1949
Thanks Gus, not had time to read all the docs you sent. Bet you can answer Phil's question above too. Now I have another query - on the 13th Dec diary mentions 'post subjected to mortar fire battery informed by phone, followed by Verey light signal' What is the Verey Light signal system please. Also what is HE ammunition? apparently ELAS used it to blast the roof off the W/shop Margaret :P
Come across another abbreviation - they are driving me nuts! T&MG fire. I assume MG stand for machine gun but what does the T stand for. Can anyone help please. Margaret
It is always more difficult without the context, but could that be TSMG? If so then Thompson Sub-Machine Gun. HE = High Explosive.
Flare pistol . https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flare_gun Different coloured flares fired to give a prearranged signal.
Thank you Charpoy for the abbreviations explanations, I can now go back into my book and complete. And thank you Owen for article about the Verey light. I shall include it as a note to my dad's War Diary book. I would like to thank everyone who has helped me along this journey with info + copies of diaries or articles it has made the whole project much more interesting reading for the family. In particular Gus and Owen your help has been invaluable. If anyone is interested dad was in 191 LAA Battery, 64 LAA Regt. serving in Norway, Home, North Africa, Italy and Greece and if you would like a CD copy of the Diary let me know. Margaret
Right guys nearly finished and come with a bunch of abbreviaitions in March 1945 Greece: "ELAS PW returning from ME" what is ME > Military Escort? "Re-categorisation and Personnel Selection Board" > what are they selecting for? "Major Wilson appointed GII to 212 area" > what GII?" "193 Bty take over guard R.S.D. and R.V.P." > some kind of dumps? "CO and Adjt conference at LF (G) HQ with Lt. Col. de Chiney" > what LF(G)? "disposal of offrs who become surplus on change to WE III/32F/2" > what WEIII/32F/2 ? I know guys this is getting silly! they might as well be speaking a foreign language, but please help. Margaret
RSD = RETURNED STORES DEPOT GII = GENERAL STAFF OFFICER, GRADE TWO WE... = WAR ESTABLISHMENT... ME = MIDDLE EAST?
LF(G)=Land Forces Greece HQ LF(G)=HQ Land Forces Greece HQ LF & ML (G) HQ Land Forces and Military Liaison (Greece) Just a variety of names for General Scobies HQ in Greece.
ELAS, the Anglophone initials of the military wing of the then Greek Communist Party? There was a vicious Civil War going on at the time hence the presence of British troops in Greece, notwithstanding the demands of the main thrust of the Allies against the Nazis in the Southern Mediterranean in Italy
That is great, thank you for info. As RSD = RETURNED STORES DEPOT I think you might right idler about RVP. Anybody got answer to what the "Personal Selection Board" team were doing? Selecting for officers or new roles for artillery troops as they stand down from infantry role perhaps? Anyway I have most of the info I was looking for so will use that first, then I shall be back guys for the answer to above. Love you all for your kindness Margaret B)
Got to June 1 1945 and diary says "C.O. and 2 i/c conference with Nomarch of Patras. Who the heck is Nomarch. Tried Google but no luck was he military or Greek or something else? Margaret
