This new model kit was flagged up on my Twitter feed today, and must say I was surprised to see the Germans used this tank, presumably ones captured in France in 1940? BRONCO - Panzerkampfwagen Mk.IV 744(E) (A13)
Achtung Panzer! - Captured Tanks ! Коллекционер баÑнов - Kreuzer Panzerkampfwagen Mk.IV 744(e) на ВоÑточном фронте
Cribbed from 'Captured American & British tanks', by Regenberg: 57 MkIV & 8 MkIVA A13s lost in France of 300+ built. Some African usage too. c.100 sent to France making it the commonest British tank there in 1940, 6 still in British service by 1941, though only one functional. Captured examples were pressed into designated English Captured Vehicle companies early on in the 1940 Campaigns, and later used by Pz.Abt. (Flamm) 100. This unit still had 9 left on 22/06/41, but all were out of service a month later. Checking in 'Tank Turret Fortifications' - though it seems c.200 cruisers of all types were captured none of the turrets were sent to the Atlantic wall fortifications, though some captured in the Desert were dug in by the Afrika korps. Difficulty in sourcing ammunition is cited as a possible reason for their lack of use when compared to other Allied types. (This may also explain the later conversion of gun tanks to Flammenwerfers). Intriguing that there was a German designation for the Covenanter, when it was virtually impossible they'd have lain hands on one. Very thorough to have a designation ready and waiting, just in case.
Well it appears to be a replica of a tank from 18th Panzer division, and here is their biography: Axis History Factbook: 18. Panzer-Division According to Wiki this was the Panzer division that fielded the Panzers specially adapted for Sealion: 18th Panzer Division (Germany) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
That's quite a vote of confidence for the old MkIV...seeing as they thought the Churchills they captured at Dieppe they thought weren't worth using! But it doesn't beat my personal favourite beutepanzer from Dieppe...
That MkVI '10.5 cm leFH-16 auf Geschutzwagen auf Fahrgestell Mk VI 736 (e)' (snappy title, as ever) is a personal favourite of mine too Phylo. Coincidentally I was just looking at an old post I made about it on a.n.other forum. I like to think of it as the 'Baby Elephant'
...seeing as they thought the Churchills they captured at Dieppe they thought weren't worth using! Either that or they couldn't move the brutes
Back to the kit, do they do a British version, as it seems to me the only way they can make an early war British tank is to make it a German one.
They do a British A13 as well. BRONCO MODELS Available at Hannants: Hannants - Bronco Models CB35025 - 1:35
Bronco are making quite a wave in finally producing some decent British Vehicles in 1/35th, rather a neglected area (been tempted by their Bailey Bridge for a while too) - Shame about the scary price rises that have affected 35th kits over the last year though. seeing as they thought the Churchills they captured at Dieppe they thought weren't worth using! Not strictly true, despite that rather famously damning post-Dieppe technical report. From the same titles as above: One example of each type taken were cobbled together for evaluation by the WaPruf, (leading to that report) and some 6pdr Mk.IIIs served with Beutepanzer Company 81, (later to become Panzer Regt.100). They were still knocking around with them at 1943's end before being transferred to another Beutepanzer unit. Parts & Ammunition shortages finally killed them off before they were sent for target duty. Turrets - Likely only one solitary MK III mounted near Le Havre at Montvilliers la Rive.
Back to the 18th Panzer Division. Apart from the "Sealion MkIII's" I cant find any reference to the usage of the A13's. Maybe they just picked any Panzer Division although I always thought they tried to be realistic in their marking schemes.

But it doesn't beat my personal favourite beutepanzer from Dieppe... It really does look good in it's new role. I wonder how effective it was after the modifications, but it certainly looks the part. Regards Tom

The 'Sealion Mk.IIIs' referred to would likely be the Tauchpanzer (underwater) version of the Pz.III, and nothing to do with any captured vehicle. The extensive use of captured vehicles wasn't exactly well-covered, the contemporary propaganda machine being unlikely to trumpet their use (other than in specific areas). This seems to have fed into a slightly thinnner amount of info on them now.

Sorry mate, my point was that I was unable to ascertain the types of tanks employed by 18th Panzer Division.Other than a mention of the Tauchpanzers, in terms of the make up of the Division by Tank types I was drawing a blank.
