Stig - don't buy that as the front line troops also saw the destruction of their country - but didn't forget their discipline - the three divisions of Mongols were brought in for the purpose of humiliation - did their work and were pulled back into the depths of Russia once more - The raping ceased but the pillaging ( broken toilets an' all ) in trains daily went on until they withdrew in the middle 50's without a murmer and with no negotiation - dialogue - arguements - nothing - they just pulled back to Russia... now the full story of that I can tell you ....but not on this forum...doubt if you would believe me anyway ! Cheers
I am well aware of what went on, I was asking for people's reviews of the FILM I mentioned. I'll watch it soon & report back on what I think of it. Not the subject matter so much but how the FILM portrays it. As this thread is in the 'Books, Film & TV' section can we keep it to reviews of books , films & TV .
Cheers Peter but I was hoping fellow forum members would give their opinions on the film. It appears it's only Kate whose seen it.
And spreading like a disease all over the world....USA next ! Tom, would you clarify this statement for me, please?
Part of the problem is that the DVD is Region 1 only and in the UK requires a multi-region player and a NTSC compatible TV.
The majority of recently made DVD players are multi-regional. You just need to unlock them to allow them to be multi-regional. I did it with all mine years ago. See: Free DVD Unlocking Codes: Make DVD players multi-region & get cheaper discs....
Just watched , fantastic film. Near the start of the film you see the Germans enjoying their victories all over Europe wearing smart clothes living the good life. Then the tables turn. They are totally defeated so much so that the previously strong German men become mere shadows who cannot protect their women. The women become the property of the victorious Red Army and have to look to their tormentors for protection. As one women quotes her husband, "If they only do part of what we have done there for 4 years it will be awful." How do you totally defeat a Nation that has burnt, raped and killed across your country ? Completely rub their noses in how weak they have become. Even the young soldier who tries to protect his girl-friend cannot shoot straight and ends up dead. The Generals who announce the German surrender are weak , worn out pathetic images of former times. The previously arrogant Gerd comes back as a weak defeated shadow of himself and then blames his wife for what she has done to survive, 'shameless , you are shameless.' I like the portrayal of the Red soldiers both male & female. I particularly liked the Mongolian chap and noticed the Soviet nurse was a tad jealous? Other telling scenes are when the Soviet soldier tells of the village children being brutally mudered by the Germans. The old German men at first suggesting they need American weapons to send the Russians back then later they see business opportunities for the future & burn their copy of Mein Kampf. Owen - as someone mentioned these were not front line troops who did these atrocities - at least not in Vienna anyway as it was known that a corps of First Class Russian troops finally entered Vienna - to be replaced two days later with a corps of Mongol Troops whose orders were " here is Vienna - do as you will" - and to their eternal shame they raped and pillaged for weeks - until the Allies finally put their collective feet down. There was a maternity hospital - near Meidling I think - which was full of just delivered and women in labour - all were raped repeatedly - and finally bayonetted through their stomachs - the just born infants were also killed by the bayonet. These monsters were our allies - but some of them ran afoul of the Argyll and Sutherlands of 78th Division - the result - the Agiles & Sufferins were posted back to Spittall far from the Russian zone. The suicides which followed them were astronomical - I still haven't forgiven that regime of hatred - now they are all good chaps ! And spreading like a disease all over the world....USA next ! Cheers So did you guys actually come into "contact" personally with these guys. Was there ever any violence, fisticuffs etc... Did you or perhaps men of your company meet the Russians ?
Skywalker - while we didn't actually meet up with the Mongols who perpetrated the atrocities as they were withdrawn after roughly one month - during which time we were held back from assuming our particular sectors by the Russians at a place called Knittelfeld - Judenberg - their sector was a 100 miles further North at the Semmering Pass - Vienner Nuestadt - there were some fisticuffs as some members of the Argyll & Sutherlands of 78th Division -( it is said - as no one could prove anything ) were "alleged" to have "put the boot in" to some Russians on a bridge in Vienna) the result was that the Agiles were banished to Spittal away to the South. Cheers

The imagery of the German men powerless to do anything other than stand by is striking. This film does not seek to portray the Germans in a sympathetic life, rather it just tells it like it was. Its not a pretty, uplifting film but one that is well worth a viewing.
