Rob there's a list of requests of the VC's I've done so far that I need help with. Most are photo's of graves.

ps The CWGC doesn't list all of the citation's for VC holders.....Something else I found out whilst doing all 182 from WW2 :D

    Andy,

Can you please give me an example? The search engine does not have an awards field (it did and I removed it as it was never used) but I have 111 WW2 VCs in the database and all appear to have citations.

The first 20 or so I looked at had some difference from the original in the Gazette.

Quite a difference there, see what you mean. I wonder who edits them?

I was rather annoyed because I cheated at first. It was so much easier to find and use the CWGC citations instead on the Gazette (All Gazetted stuff you have to re-type in word once you eventually find them).

To my horror about two weeks in I discovered CWGC edited them so back to the drawing board I went to start again

    I can laugh now ;)

    Cheers

Perhaps CWGC have a word limit. I should know what since my early search engine hacking had some crashes due to these fields.
The CWGC citation may give some clue words to search for in the gazette. Drives me crazy gazette searching.

Well I've finsihed for now regarding all the VC's all though I'm thinking about doing all the George Cross's from WW2 too

I wouldn't mind doing the US Medal of Honor's (I think that's around 350ish though plus US Navy and Marines are seperate I think) too but haven't looked into where the citations are if in the public domain.

    Cheers Derek,

Just tried a variation of your suggestions to no avail.

Surely they've not forgotten him on CWGC-After all he did get a VC.

    CWGC :: Casualty Details

    Name:FAZL DIN
    Nationality:Indian
    Rank:Naik
    Regiment/Service:10th Baluch Regiment
    Unit Text:7th Bn.
    Age:24
    Date of Death:02/03/1945
    Service No:18602
    Awards: V C
Additional information: Son of Nur Bakhsh; husband of Sardar Bibi, of Husain pur, Hoshiarpur, India.
    Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
    Grave/Memorial Reference:Face 39.
    Memorial:RANGOON MEMORIAL
Citation:The citation in the London Gazette of 24th May, 1945, gives the following details : In Burma, on 2nd March, 1945, Naik Fazl Din commanded a section during a company attack on a Japanese bunkered position. His section was held up by machine-gun fire and grenades from several bunkers. Unhesitatingly he attacked the nearest position with grenades and silenced it; but as he led his men against the others, six Japanese soldiers rushed from a house near by, led by two officers wielding swords. The section Bren gunner shot one officer and another Japanese soldier, but was killed by the second officer, who next ran his sword through Naik Fazl Din. Despite this terrible wound Naik Fazl Din, seized the sword from the Japanese officer and killed him with it - he killed two more Japanese soldiers, and encouraged his section before staggering to his platoon headquarters to report. He collapsed there, and died soon after reaching the Regimental Aid Post. His action was seen by almost the whole platoon, who, inspired by his gallantry and taking advantage of the bewilderment created among the enemy by the loss of their leaders, continued the attack and destroyed the Japanese garrison. The supreme devotion to duty of this gallant N.C.O. even when fatally wounded, his presence of mind and outstanding courage, can seldom have been equalled, and reflect his unquenchable spirit.

Longest citation I could find is a little over 4000 characters, so perhaps they allow a computer friendly 4096 maximum (If you don't understand this, don't worry)
