Got a N&MP brochure in the post today.
One book that caught by eye was The Battle For Kharkov by Jean Restayn .

    Battle For KharkovX::XWorld War IIX::XTime PeriodsX::XNaval & Military Press

This bit will interest Alex in Russia.

This volume should herald the first of a number of excellent photo albums by Jean Restayn which we will publish in the coming years (at this time he is preparing one on Kursk).

    What's the Kharkov one like?
Is it balanced or like alot of OstFront books full of German kit and hardly anything on the Soviets?
    As it says this
If you enjoy looking at photos of German armor, uniforms, equipment and known personalities, this book is for you.

Has anyone got any of Jean Restayn's other books?

PS. I know the post doesn't exactly match the thread title but I bet it got you to look. ;)

Restayn's Tiger books aren't bad, but he's definitely a German Armour specialist. I'd be surprised if these books weren't primarily focused on the axis side.

Even so, a book highlighting the Kharkov campaign is still to be welcomed.

Wow! I wonder how clear this book will show up all those battles around Kharkov and its ground, because mostly only few know all those small villages (even Prokhorovka) that became famous after Battle Of Kursk and Battle Of Kharkov, unlike those french Carentan etc. :)
Looks like I have to order that book, I'll ask my gf to order it (i still don't have plastic card that supports e-shops, dammit!).
Also those "number of excellent photo albums" is very interesting thing becaue it seems he were on same places with me. :)

Operation Citadel: A Text and Photo Album, v. 2: North

    Came out in 2006.
    Anyone got it?

    More here.
AbeBooks: Search Results - ISBN 9780921991724

    Picture of cover here.
Operation Citadel - Vol 2 : The North - WW2 Eastern Front - World War Two Books – Military History Books online - Ceredigion - Wales UK

So if the book came out in 2006 how old was the blurb on the N&MP booklist I had in the post or is he working on another volume ??

Did any Soviet military historian, perhaps one of the participating generals, complete a history or account of the Battle of Kursk from the Soviet perspective? I'd be interested to read something along those lines.

Man, there is a number of soviet historian's books on Battle Of Kursk, there is even official Ministry Of Defence book (first issue published back in 1947, have number of re-issues) that covering this battle from perspective of soviet authorities and most consists of information from battle reports from units higher than battalions. Most of 'em worth reading (i am reading now Kursk's Breakdown - I had provided some stats from there in Battle Specific section, it is very informative). But I wonder how many of 'em were published in english ...

I have his two books on Kursk "Operational Citadel" Volume 1: TheSouth and "Operational Citadel - Volume 2 "The North" , also his book on Kharkov.
( Are these the same books being discussed ?)

The text is good but they are very much photographic histories - most of the photographic coverage I had seeing for the first time - very good in fact.
The editions I have were published by the Canadian firm Fedorwicz.

I will post up a few phoots as a taster of what is in them.....back in a minute .....or 15 more like.

These are from the two kursk books , quality of reproductions is good and photo size is excellent , large capturing plenty of detail.
The Art work is excellent , colour plates of major elements .
Text describes the battle , its ebb and flow , the critical moments ,all photos are well captioned good sensible descriptions.

    From the Kharkov book.

The range of photos is quite good some of tem well known , eg the MkIV and infantry riding on it , commander looking tired , headphotos on smoking - a number of photos of that tank and troops moving into the city.
Some of the reproduction is not so sharp - probably due to conditions in which photos were taken but it does not detract too much from the book as a whole.
Art work is good but it is very much a photographiuc record of the SS Panzer Corp.
Nipe's "Last Victory in Russia" is a good one to read, using this volume in tandem.
