Hi. I'm new here and was looking for information on my Grandfather's regiment. I have his soldier's release book which states he was in this regiment. It looks as though his number was T/5524 and his rank was WS/CPL. Does anyone know what duties this regiment would have performed please?

    Hi Karen,

RASC stands for Royal Army Service Corps and this was his regiment. RASC were basically the logistics branch of the army and transported men, rations, fuel, ammunition, clothing, etc between depots and forward to the fighting units.

The Coy stands for ‘company’, in this case a GT (General Transport) company. Most of these would have operated on the lines of communication from base depots to those of the armies closer to the front.

I’ll try to have a look over the weekend to see if I can identify where 904 Coy served.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your research.

    Regards

    Tom

There is also an introduction thread for Karen - User Introduction have suggested she obtains his service records so it will be known where he served and when, assuming all his time was spent in RASC

    Karen,

RASC Companies are always difficult to research but 904 was a General Transport Company serving Anti Aircraft Command and its predecessors in the North of England.

A GT Company serving Anti Aircraft units would usually have:
A transport platoon with some 30 3 ton lorries.
A platoon for loading and unloading lorries.
It was responsible for collecting ammunition, petrol and supplies from a depot and delivering them to Anti Aircraft units.

As suggested the Service Record will tell you where he was and when, and the unit. You might then obtain the War Diary for the unit. This will have more detail of the locations etc but is unlikely to mention individuals.
