I had always thought that the 8th Kings Royal Irish Hussars, as the 7th Armoured Division's Recce Regiment was equipped mainly with Cromwell Tanks with some Stuarts in the Recce troop. I have discovered from recent research on the net that they may also have been equipped with Challenger tanks.

I wonder if any one could point me to a source that would give the exact equipment used by the regiment when it arrived in France on 9th June 1944.

I know they also had Daimler Scout Cars, and other ancillary vehicles, i.e Jeeps, I would like to find out what other vehicles and equipment they used at this time.

I cannot give details for this particular regiment, but according to Peter Gudgin, Armoured Firepower (Sutton, 1997), 12 of the A30 Challengers were issued to each armoured regiment in 1944 on the scale of four per squadron. He goes on to say that this 17pr equipped tank was not a success because it was under-armoured and difficult to steer.
