That should be 160 Field Regiment, not 106 Field Artillery.

Just a word of warning - the key thing to remember is the heading "Last Regiment or Corps ....", he may have seen service with other units.

    802226 Gnr. Eric Hill.

I was unable to find him on:-
    Casualty Lists.
    GSM Medals.
    Royal Artillery Tracer Cards.

His Royal Artillery Attestation Record provides some information.

    Enlisted 08.05.1930.
    Royal Artillery
    Regular Army.
    Army Reserve 12.03.1937.
Presume he was recalled to colours for WW2.
    'Z' Reserve 31.01.1946.
    Re-enlisted at some point.
Discharged due to age limit, 1956.

    Hi

Not sure about "Re-enlisted at some point."?

With my father, he was posted to Z Reserve and although there was a note on his service record about being transferred to RE Reserve in 1953, he never served after his discharge in 1946 and he was working in the mines from 46 to 52 and the railway from 52 to 56.He was discharged for Reserve Liability in 1959 even though by then he had migrated to Australia.

As stated above, only his service records will give a full answer.
    regards

Thankyou I’m not a relative so I wouldn’t be eligible for his service records. He was a family freind and neighbour, when he died his house and belongings went to a lady who helped him with his house and shopping I will try and get into contact with her.

Anyone can apply to TNA for Service records, as long as you have a death certificate.

    Best of luck.

From the address on Eric Hill's medal card.

I was able to find a photo of an Eric Hill in the Clitheroe Advertiser, dated 09.07.1987. The article claims that Eric Hill was formerly of the Royal Horse Artillery.

In my previous post I assumed that Sgt. Eric Hill would have needed to re-join the army in order to be Discharged Age Limit, 1956.

Another member has cast doubt about this assumption.

Can anyone provide a clear and precise British Army definition for "Discharge Age Limit."

Did a soldier need to be in uniform to receive it?

My father was released from the army as seen below, but never received a Discharge Age Limit.

    Thank you.

    Hi,

Likely an error by the reporter misrecording his regiment - not unusual then or now.

As bofors said it is a standard 1950’s endorsement/stamp placed on the “record” of a soldier who was on Class Z reserve post WW2 and had usually attained 45 years of age or become eligible for discharge under the 1959 Act (or it’s predecessor) - look up the numerous copy service records posted on the forum for further examples.

You see it on other regimental attestation registers available online - see Coldstream Guards and Scots Guards papers on findmypast. Had the man reenlisted you would see the new regiment/corps noted together with a service number (new system post 1947).

I received and replied to your contact to the Chindit Society Matt. We have nothing on Eric in our files I'm afraid...the service records are your best bet to learn more.
