He was not the Reconnaissance Corps. He was in the Lothian and Borders Horse (a Yeomanry Regiment - think TA/Army reserve) and was captured in France in late May early June 1940. The Recconaissance Corps wasn't formed until 1941.

He was held in Stalag 21A, at Schildberg (now called Ostrzeszow), Poland and also Stalag 21B at Szubin (a few miles southwest of Bydgoszcz, Poland) His POW Number was 10549.

As Soviet forces advanced westwards, he was moved to Stalag 8A in October 1944. This was south of the town of Görlitz in Saxony, Germany but it is now in Poland.

He is entiltled to the 1939/45 Star and the War Medal.

    Hi,

    Welcome to the forum.

You ought to apply to Swiss Red Cross 27th May for a copy of the information held in their files via this link -

Requests for information about people held during Spanish Civil War or Second World War: Quarterly limit reached

Check the site promptly at the given opening time and a pop up online application form will be visible. Complete and submit the form speedily as the application window can close within 90 minutes due to the limit being reached.

It’s a free service and you can expect a reply by email within 3 months. You may be lucky and get a copy of the capture card postcard he completed on arrival at his first camp.

Try having a look on Ancestry to see if he completed a POW Liberation report.

I could not find a liberation questionaire for him on ancestry.

The wikipedia entry for Stalag 8A says that starting on 14th Feb 1945 all American & British pows were marched out westwards on one of the many routes of the Long March.
