    1st Guards Brigade, 78th Division, 13 Corps
7375548 War Substantive Corporal Michael McEWAN, 1st Field Ambulance ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS attached 3rd Battalion WELSH GUARDS

    Date: 9th October 1944. Map Ref: 058165, Sheet 99/IV, 1/50,000, ITALY.

On night 9th October Corporal McEWAN was attached to WELSH GUARDS Regimental Aid Post at 058165. The GRENADIER GUARDS H.Q. was hit by a direct shell and five men wounded, one very seriously. Corporal McEWAN at once took a party of stretcher bearers to bring in the wounded under intense shell fire.

Later that night an enemy patrol got right up to the same H.Q. and inflicted twelve casualties, six being stretcher cases. Before it was certain that the enemy patrol had departed, Corporal McEWAN led another party of stretcher bearers and organised the evacuation of casualties, remaining himself at the old H.Q.s which had to be evacuated, until the last casualty was clear.

This N.C.O.'s conduct was an inspiration to all who saw him. He paid no regard to shot or shell and exceeded his duties by clearing casualties from forward of the R.A.P., when help was badly needed.

Signed Lieutenant-Colonel J.E. GURNEY, M.C., Commanding 3rd Battalion WELSH GUARDS.

    Granted an Immediate M.M.
