Recommendation for Award for Forbes, Hamish Stewart Rank: Lieutenant Service... | The National Archives
    Reference: WO 373/57/703 [WO373/57-ir367]
    Name Forbes, Hamish Stewart
    Rank: Lieutenant
    Service No: P/72465
    Regiment: Training Battalion Welsh Guards
Theatre of Combat or Operation: Repatriated PoWs
    Award: Military Cross
Date of announcement in London Gazette: 29 November 1945

P/72465 Lieutenant Hamish Stewart FORBES, Training Battalion, WELSH GUARDS

Lieut. FORBES was Intelligence Officer 1st Batt. WELSH GUARDS during the operations in FRANCE & BELGIUM 17 May - 29 May 1940.

During the battle of ARRAS 17 - 23 May and the subsequent withdrawal, he performed most gallant and valuable service, often under heavy fire, in liaison and Recce duties.

On 29 May when the Batt. was heavily attacked by German Infantry and tanks at VFYWEG, and their positions infiltrated and encircled, he moved about his duties under heavy fire and was of great assistance in the defence of Batt. H.Q. When a withdrawal was ordered he remained to the last organising the withdrawal. His party was finally overrun and made prisoner, by undoubtedly his cool conduct and willingness to sacrifice himself, materially assisted the safe withdrawal of others.

During his long captivity Lieut. FORBES made no less than 10 attempts to escape for which he suffered heavy penalties, but which never broke his morale or determination to try again.

    MC

Very strongly recommended. Not forwarded before as the Commanding Officer at the time, Brigadier COPELAND-GRIFFITHS, had to wait till the release of prisoners-of-war so as to verify certain of the facts.

    Signed Date 4 Aug 45 V. COPELAND-GRIFFITHS formerly Commanding 1st Batt. WELSH GUARDS, 26 Jan 1938 to 14 July 1940
