70th COMMEMORATION BATTLE OF THE SCHELDT

This autumn the southern part of the Netherlands will give attention to the fact that 70 years ago the country was liberated from Nazi occupation. In the province of Zeeland and the western part of the province of Noord-Brabant we will commemorate and celebrate with a variety of activities.

The common theme of the commemorative and celebratory activities is the “Battle of the Scheldt”. The largely forgotten Battle of Scheldt was the longest and costliest battle on Dutch soil. The outcome of this vital operation was crucial for the final course of the Second World War in the Western-European theatre. Therefore it deserves our greatest respect and a rightful place in history. The 70th commemoration offers us the opportunity to reflect on the importance of peace and freedom. This is by no means a given fact. We must that freedom is both vulnerable and valuable. The peace and freedom in the Netherlands we cherish was gained by profound suffering and destruction. Many sacrificed their lives for this purpose. It is appropriate and vital to commemorate and celebrate the 70th anniversary of our liberation. Lest we Forget.

The programme of the Province of Zeeland is scheduled for Saturday, November 1. The programme includes the Commemoration- and Liberation tour, linking Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and Breskens in particular with the amphibious landing locations of Westkapelle, Flushing and Baarland and also the opening of the reconstructed Boulevard and Oranjemolen (windmill) in Flushing. The day will commence in Breskens with a commemoration of all civil casualties of Zeeland and will end with a commemoration of the German capitulation on the Damplein in Middelburg and a parade through the city center, towards the Markt (market square).

More activities are scheduled in the province of Zeeland in connection with the commemorative year. For a summary we kindly refer to the website: www.bevrijdingzeeland.nl. By way of this website, which is managed by the Stichting Cultureel Erfgoed Zeeland (Cultural Heritage Zeeland Foundation) you can directly contact the committees involved.
