I cannot seem to find where the 6th Seaforths were on May 1st 1944. Any help will be appreciated, thank you Tony
The two British Divisions at Anzio in May '44 were not told of Clark's forthcoming disobedience to ignore Alexander's Orders to advance to Valmontone - and capture Rome - they were only to advance North up the coast while the US divisions headed East…thus the two German armies escaped the Valmontone trap and we had to fight them again at the Gothic Line- losing 14.000 KIA and 16,000 WIA…..this is why we all loved Clark - and he was STILL promoted…! Cheers
From the 5th Div history by Aris page 223. I know I've posted this before elsewhere on the forum, I think in a thread about the Northamptons. see post #28 here http://ww2talk.com/forums/topic/6634-can-anyone-help-me-2nd-battalion-northamptonshire-regiment/?p=71541 There are maps on the forum showing the location of the Fortress & GoogleEarth co-ords (somewhere) Have been there back in 2008. map> http://ww2talk.com/forums/index.php?app=core&module=attach§ion=attach&attach_rel_module=post&attach_id=8803 On the 30th April another determined German attack on the Fortress overran a platoon of 2 Northamptons, then in residence. A quickly mounted counterattack , in the afternoon was not successful. It was decided that 6 Seaforth should make another attack after midnight on 1st May , but again this was not a success. It was then planned to relieve the Northamptons with the Seaforth that night so the former could mount a proper attack the following night.
Thanks folk, sorry about delay, had no email about replies and somehow lost the plot. Thanks now, got the answer I needed Tony
