Does anyone have a copy of the 6th Black Watch diary for May 1944, particularly for date 14th May, 1944, but would appreciate as many dates either side. 6 Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) | The National Archives Mike
Mike. I will check when I am on my PC tomorrow. On 14 May 44, supported by the tanks of 2 Lothians, 6 BW were advancing slowly up the Liri Valley. The monastery at Cassino was still in German hands so the troops were very exposed on their right flanks but they were making progress. Regards Frank
Many thanks for your reply Frank. I was wondering if there was any mention of a Sergeant 2753795 Charles Peter McDonald Stewart. I spoke to a 6th black Watch veteran a number of years ago who knew him (from Aberfeldy) and he had heard at the time that he had been killed in an orchard. Mike
Thanks again, this is extremely useful. I have attached a google earth view of what I think to be the correct positions and a Kmz file. I think i have it correct but welcome any corrections. Mike
I had this file out in TNA a couple of weeks ago. It had a great map of the battalion's movements in May 1944. Unfortunately I didn't have time to copy it.
Point 76 is on here: www.bl.uk/onlinegallery/onlineex/maps/europe/largeimage138654.html Just shows on here:
Mike. And this. Follow the green line. That was A Sqn 2 Lothians who, with their Shermans, accompanied 6 BW in the attack. Regards Frank
Hi Owen..Sorry to jump in on this thread...I am looking for the war diary through to the end of Sept 44. Just clutching at straws but I dont suppose you have the rest. If not is the Paul Reed you mention the same gentleman who runs The Old Frontline podcast???
