Hi and thanks for your message. I was researching the MM and Bar to Cpl William Robertson who won his second MM during the attack on Alpon. I was hoping the war diary may shed some light. It’s surprising that for such a rare double award it doesn’t seem to feature in the press of the day much.

Dorset Man, i see many people reacted already in the mean time.

I dont have the Wardiary of the 6th , but did some research.
    CPL
    William MM ROBERTSON
    Service Number 3244200

In the National archives you can donwload the File WO 373-54_6
Ofcourse filenumbers are not correct, but i found it. unfortunatly not the best quality. See attachment.

I tried to read, maybe you can fill up the gaps in the text, mainly at the end.

    On 9 Mar 1945 "A "Company launched a dawn
attack on the milk factory North of Alpon.
The two leading platoons ran into very heavy
opposition and no news was heard of them
    since first light.
At 1100 hrs Cpl Robertson was ordered to
take a recce patrol to find out the situation.
The ground leading to the factory was swept with
heavy MG fire whilst snipers were very active.
Cpl Robertson led his patrol over the open
ground with great skill and under heavy Fire
and brought back information of enemy defences

wich was of the .... ....to a subsequent attack, and captured two prisoners, the information from one of them was of great value.
The ..., busted over the hours .... heavy fire

Nothing for the MM or Bar in the Battalion history, he is listed in the Nominal Roll and also the Honours and Awards sections but no extra info

    Hello,
Member Peter Halsall was effectively looking up the same event at thread:
The Battle of Alpon: the fate of 6th Cameronians SR
which you may care to peruse.
It involves a long scroll, but there are snippets on page 14 of the 2005 Regimental Journal at:
    http://www.cameronians.org/_covenanter_editions/Covenanter2002-2008v7.pdf
together with other battlefield visit pieces in other years’ editions, not seen. I know a few former Cameronians and will ask if they know any viable sources that may be fruitful. The link I put in to an image etc of Robertson’s medals does not seem to work now.

Thanks all - that’s all been really useful. Looks like a trip to Kew good be in order to have a look at the war diary. For everyone’s interest I found this picture which I assume was for the award of his first MM.

Hi there. I'm looking into the movements of the battalion on or around 19th January in the area of saeffert . I'm trying to get the background to my grandfather's death on the 19th (he's buried in the war graves cemetery in Sittard) as I'm planning a trip there later in the year. Thanks in advance for any information.

His brother was killed fighting with the 2nd battalion of the West Yorkshire regiment at Admin box on the 21st Feb 1944 he was a sergeant his name is Robert Stewart Scott. He was 20 years old. We plan on visiting his grave in Burma. I just want to make sure these lads are never forgotten and if I can pass there sad sacrifice and stories on in an accurate way I will. I dont know if you can help with any information or guide me to anyone who can help.

AB64 has passed. Others may be able to help.

I would suggest you start separate threads for each subject in this section: Searching for Someone & Military Genealogy

In the title use: full name, DoB (Date of Birth), Service Number and unit.

    Charles's Service No. is: 14791088. From: https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/f...tails/2041750/charles-alexander-hunter-scott/

    Robert's Service No. is: 4538523. From: https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/2262748/robert-stewart-scott/

For this subject add a cross-reference to this thread for background.

We always recommend applying for their Service Records, but neither are currently shown as held by The National Archives.

That may mean his record is still with the MoD or it is with TNA being processed for release. If you follow the web link given you can ask where it is and they will reply. See: Get a copy of military records of service
