If you are happy to wait for a month, I'm researching this unit and will be getting copies of their war diaries.

Weathers not too bad in Holland (the South that is) at the moment.

What's happening on 18 October? I need to check my work diary when I get back home this weekend and will let you know if it is possible.

I am also interested in January 1945 for 62 AT, since I saw the graves of Brown, Callan and Rapley at St. Annaland last week. Died 17 January 1945. Did not realise they were in Zeeland at that time.

Are you looking at this also, or just a coincidence.

Just had a thought. 62 AT did diaries as well for 245, 246, 247 and 248 batteries. Do you know which of them you need, or all to be sure?

    Hello
I am trying to find out more about my grandfather's service history. I am looking at his Service and Paybook - and the writing says 62 A/TR Regt. His Army Number was 994912 and he enlisted in August 1940 - in the Territorial Army by the looks of things.

I am hoping this is the 62nd Anti Tank Regiment. All we know is that he landed on Juno Beach, went to Caen, then somewhere in Holland and I have a photo of him outside Cologne cathedral! He died 35 years ago and my grandmother has dementia so I'm not going to be able to gain any further info from my family.

I hope you can help me. If I apply to Glasgow am I going to get any more information than I have already?

    Yours - gratefully...
    Karen

    Hi Karen & Welcome.

If you can apply to Glasgow for his service records, then it should tell you which battery of 62 AT he was in. They had 4 batteries, 245, 246, 247 & 248. The reason why I suggest getting them, is that this regiment is great in that they had Battery diaries, which are very detailed.

I have started researching it myself, as it was the British 1 Corp Anti-Tank Regiment. My Father was in 102 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, which was also British 1 Corps, so they were in the same areas of action.

They did indeed go to Normandy, Belgium (where they fought as infantry and this is one area where I have a lot of info), Holland and then on to Germany as occupation forces.

    Regards - Rob

Thank you both for your help. I will apply to Glasgow and see how I get on. Phillip - I have visited your site and it is a labour of love. Once I have some more details I will email you the photos I have.

My husband has a huge interest in Operation Market Garden and has visited the area several times - I've lost count of the number of books he has on the topic. Once bitten by the bug - you stay well and truly bitten!

    Best wishes
    Karen

Thanks for that link. I've started to research this unit, as they are particularly interesting as an AT unit. There are individual battery diaries throughout the war, which also adds to the information you can retrieve.

    Cheers - Rob

Hi - My name is Andy Smith. I am researching my late fathers War record.
He was in 247 Battery 62nd RA. His name was George Smith.
Can anyone fill me in with any details of where he went during the war.
I know he was in Tolen and Roosendale in Holland and finished in Hamm in Germany.

Some vehicle WD serials used by 62nd Anti-Tank Regiment

    Crusader Gun Tractors
    T124225, T125708, T126880, T127029

Unfortunately I have no further detail as to which Battery, 246 or 247, they belong to.

    M10 3” Gun

In an earlier post it states that 245 and 248 Battery used 17 pdr’s so I need to do a little more research to confirm the gun type. Again no Battery details.

    M10 17 pdr

    S237786, S237811 “CHELSEA” 248 Batter J Troop, S290448, S290458, S290501, S290503, S290568, S290593, S290623, S290636, S290665, S290686, S290729, S290732, S290783, S290786, S290806, S290807

Does anyone of you have info on the batteries belonging to the 61st anti-tank Regt (241-242-243-244 btty's) for the month of January 1945.

I've the 61st Regt War Diary but there is no mention in it on the turned over SP gun.

Can someone tell by the vehicle number to which battery the SP gun belonged.

One Self-propelled of 242 Battery was knocked out on 13 January 1945 with 3 killed and 1 wounded. (Maybe the photo is of this?) A SP of 193 Battery was then put under command 242 Battery to replace the one lost in this incident.

Also 244 battery was not under command 61 AT in January 1945, 193 Battery was.

According to the war diary for January 1945, this Regt had 16 SP, 16 x 17 Pdrs and 16 x 6 Pdrs.

    Hi Ramacal,

Thank you for your prompt response.

I'm afraid that this is not the SP gun that was knocked out on the 13th. That SP - together with a couple of Shermans - was knocked out by a Panther tank near Hubermont, which is on top of the high ground to the southwest of La Roche, which is actually quite open rolling country, quite unlike the scenery on the photograph.

The picture of the turned over SP gun most likely is taken on the steep approach road leading from La Roche to Hives in the 154 Brigade sector - the 154 Brigade was supported by the 241 Battery (see Diary entrances for 11 & 12 jan 45 in the 61st A/T Regt WD). I think this SP gun simply slid down the icy road and overturned.

Is it possible to ID the vehicle from the vehicle number?

There are no vehicle serial numbers mentioned in the documents I've got.

As you say, the diary mentions how icy the roads were and at times the regt could not go anywhere because of this. I'm not surprised if this is what caused it to turn over.
