  1. Tim, thank you so much for this news, it confirms what I had thought and all my research to date has pointed to the Sumatran Railway. I can now write with confidence of his terrible journey. I am most grateful of your help.

    Hi Spencer,

Here is a copy of George Muse's returning POW form (His name is recorded on page 337 of Patrick's book - 2nd edition). He was in 12 Battery.

Now that is interesting. Lt Col Dunlop is Weary Dunlop the famous Australian surgeon.
    Weary Dunlop - Wikipedia
With the amount of time spent in hospitals it looks possible that Sergeant Muse was either wounded or sick.
Spencer - it might be worth while reading the book 'The War Diaries of Weary Dunlop'.
Here is the entry in the Java Roll:

Wrongly lists him as RAF (I'll send a correction to the web site) but puts him on Sumatra Railway moving from Java on the transport Chuka Maru 14/05/44 in Java Party 21.

WO 361/2221 Java Party 21 - nominal roll. Lists him under RAF.

  4. This is incredible. Thank you both for this extensive research and supporting documentation. I have no knowledge of him being wounded, but he certainly had a "bad war" as my Aunt says. I am aware he was starved and his stomach shrank so much he could never eat a large meal thereafter. He ate little and often (pig's trotters being his favourite meal!). I am compiling all this information for my children (what would have been his greats) so that his service is never forgotten. Thank you again, I really can't explain what it means to me.

Spencer - I haven't read it but this book may be of interest to you.
    Welcome
Your grandfather is listed on the Roll for the Sumatra Railway on this site.

  7. What is the easiest way to find out what medals he would have earned during his time?

Get a copy of his Service Record.
Get a copy of military service records
Medals awarded should be marked in these. The records will give you all the details of his service (but not time as FEPOW). If you can't understand them then post them on this Forum where many members can help with the interpretation. I think it is taking about six weeks to get the records from MOD from the date of application. You will need a copy of his death certificate.

    Hi,

I have just found my grandfather in your list:

    William Ferguson
    S/N 847229

I have just ordered the book too and cannot wait to read it.

I am trying to trace my grandfather as he disappeared after returning home after the war. Is there any point in ordering his service record? I don't even know if I can do this with no death certificate.

  13. Hello, I am just starting out with my family tree and researching my paternal Grandad, Frederick Norman Parkinson. I know he was captured in Singapore and from my research, it looks like he was in 6th HAA. Stories passed down say he was captured defending a Golf Course so I think he may well have been in 3rd Battery. Would you have any information at all as I cannot see his name listed? I know his Service Number is 983002
    Many Thanks
    Andy

    Hi Andy,

I went through the entire file looking for returning the POW forms, but did not find one at The National Archives at Kew. I did this for the author of a book about 6 HAA Regiment. I've got an email from the man, Pat Walker and he has found some more names. I've have a look to see if your relative is mentioned.

Please watch this space and I'll be soon.

    regards,

    Rob

I've found his name in 3 Places.

6 HAA Regiment then sent to RAOC (Royal Army Ordnance Corps) and finally to the REME
    (Royal Electrical Mechanical Enginers).

I'll send this info to you by private message within the hour. This will give you some more info to work with.

I do recommend you apply for his service records from The Ministry of Defence. Difficult during the current situation.

  16. Thank you for your help. I am going to apply for his records when I can afford it, the same goes for ordering Pat Walkers book. The Far East seems to be a quite neglected theatre for history books, and I look forward to reading it. I am about to start reading a book by Ernest Warwick who apparently crossed paths with my Grandad as a POW. It was given to my dad when they met thumbnail_IMG_2533.jpg thumbnail_IMG_2534.jpg

  18. Thank you, Graham. What does FMP stand for please? Had those capture/release dates but that attestation year confirms what my dad said he thought was his join up year. Thank you for your help.
