I was in the museum on Thursday, 30th June, 2022. In the grounds of it is the memorial of the 2 Foresters. I sat around taking some various photos of it before the sun got in the way. After I'd taken many photos from all sides, I decided to have a beer or two has you do from a red hut that stands on the left corner. Here is a photo of a forum member in his prime and ( looking much younger).. It was taken on the 30/06/2010 at 1938 hrs. Squire, sure you will not mind? I just had to post it has you are looking far much younger.

The red hut can be seen in the file below.

Here is where the original was. Its taken from The Story of The 2nd Battalion The Sherwood Foresters 1939-1945, JWA Masters. I'm left with a puzzle regarding the caption that the author has put at the bottom of the illustration. I've checked the war diary for the end of June, all way through July, and can see no mention of this memorial being erected. Perhaps I need my specs on again (and Its most strange that it is not mentioned).

Janet, not sure till I have a look at Master's book and the war diary. The detail in the war diary for June, and July is not much use. Something about r&r and some training for some Op.
The Adjutant seems to have been doing other things than the diary.

Putting aside that they got smashed to bits in the earlier part of the campaign has you know, the diary for all of 2 Foresters gives not much. Surprised that Masters could write the book.

    Will do some more reading

    Stu.

I suspect the battalion was resting not far away. Pity it didn't get mention in the diary but as you say not surprising.

I am not sure that the columns are linked to the 2 FORESTERS memorial.

Frank, I'm sure you once told me where the 2 FORESTERS memorial was originally? Sorry, if that is not the case? I've noticed "Fossa del Aquabuana" on the memorial to the right which is mentioned in Master's book (and is not in the war diary that I can see at the moment). I think I've found a book shop that is selling his book? I just need to ring them up to see if they still have it? Its only taken around eight years to find a copy that is for sale. I'm getting side-tracked.:smug: Bliss if they have it?

The remaining pages to follow along with the war diary pages that Gary Tankard copied for me.

My thanks to Frank who lent me this book (twice via The Prince Consort's Library in Aldershot). I would love a day in that library. Probably not open to the public?

    Regards,
    Stu.

Whilst walking around in the Anzio Beachhead Museum, I came across a most useful book that was for sale of which cost me 20 Euros. ANZIO Guida ai loughi sbarco Landing places guide. I think the author is Patrizio Colantuono?. I found this book really helpful in finding some memorials around the port of which I did not know about. One of the chapters is a case of the buildings has they was, and how they look today. I spent a while walking around the port and what a lovely place if you get the chance? Much building work being done (more of a case of repairing some of the old buildings). I did not catch the name of the chap who works in the museum due to him not speaking English, or me Italian. I did see him in his car coming out of the Anzio War Cemetery later on. A wave was given.

I'm not sure that the war diaries will give us the answer. Perhaps I'm wrong..
