Hello everyone, Please could someone with access either to the relative war diary or to Alastair Borthwick's book plase tell me where the 5th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders were in January 1944? Thanks, Vitellino
Vitellino - They were committed in Belgium and from 10 Jan 45 onwards actively taking part in the reduction of the 'Bulge' in the Ardennes. On 17 Jan 45 they went back to Holland to prepare for 'Op Veritable' which was due to start in early Feb 45. See: 16th December 1944 Battle of the Bulge begins For 5th Seaforth: 16th December 1944 Battle of the Bulge begins
51st Div history by Salmond mentions on pages 135- 136 the following locations for the Division. Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire , Amersham , Berkhampstead & Great Missenden. Monty inspected the Division 15th Feb 44 at Berkhampstead.
We know where they were in Feb 1944 “HM King George VI inspects officers of 5th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders during a snow storm at Gorhambury Park, Hertfordshire, 29 February 1944 ” TD
They sure had left. Quote from page 135. ..the Highland Division...were brought home to the kindly shores of the Clyde. It was pleasant to make Scotland on a 1943 November morning...
5th Seaforth were billeted in Hertfordshire and Essex. 152 Brigade began sailing in convoy from Augusta, Sicily 23rd October 1943.
