None of the family down here had them , so presumed grandad had sent them up north to his Dad , but if he never applied for them my Auntie could ?

Yeah - nearest living NOK is entitled person.

Medals: campaigns, descriptions and eligibility - GOV.UK

It wasn't as unusual as you may think for soldiers not to apply. WW1 soldiers got theirs issued automatically but post WW2 forms were available from 1948/49.

    PS

Doubt he will be entitled to Arctic Star as I don't think his unit served in a sufficiently northern latitude in Norway to qualify.

    PPS

If the family do apply could you please return to the forum to update members on the outcome.

    Good Luck!

Sorry , another question , my Grandfather was discharged for being medically unfit for further service in 1951 , the reason unknown , just this in his Service book ( 519 ( V ) RR 1940 ) does anyone have an idea what this means ?

    Hi
that's probably KR, not RR, as in King's Regulations, see the attachment in this linked post
    Kings Regulation (Army) Lookups 1912/1935/1940

Thanks both of you , it was the 1940 that through me , I'm sure he was injured at some point before Jan 44 , as he had a nasty scar on the inside of his right elbow , you can clearly see it in the photo I posted in the Recce Forum , also he never went to Belgium and Germany with the 5th Recce after Italy ?

Aye, to confirm: the year refers to the Regulations themselves (which were periodically updated, re-published and re-issued). So, nothing to do with the timeline of the entry in the records just a ref back to the relevant paragraph, (section) and version in use at that time.

    Hi,

They are 2 separate entries dated 5.2.1944

    1. Admitted 141 Field Ambulance

    2. Transferred 104 General Hospital

Simple google search on the phrase "198 Transit Camp Italy" would've given you a link to this document that gives it's March 1944 location at Afragola (Modern day suburb of Naples), Italy on P3.

As you can gather , I'm useless at this , am big on books , but the internet is a mystery to me, I do tend to rely on my daughter for all things internet , so sorry for the silly questions , I'll try and get more savvy as far as the internet is concerned , thanks for your patience . Terry

    That's fine Terry.

You'll make google your best friend in no no time at all!

I personally find it more fulfilling to turn up new bits of information myself.

    Regards

    Steve

Am now going to need a reputable Medal mounting firm , any recommendations would be extremely helpful ☺have looked at a few already but think one that members have used would be a better bet. Terry
