Came across this image in the war diaries of a Canadian unit when I was at the TNA the other day and thought several members might be interested?
Paul, Many thanks for the post. My wife's second cousin was with the Perth Regiment, part of the 5th Armoured Division. Cheers from the colony Randy
I don''t like the Frisians,Paul , I think one need a good location ref, or else it would be hard to find.
PS found there is also a Wirdum in Groningen, which I think would be this one,as there was more action in Groningen then in Friesland, and I like the Groningers
Groningen would make sense as I think that's were the unit who took the photo was based in 1945. I thought you guys were all Dutch?? Or is it just double-Dutch to the likes of me!? I shall be polite when I am in your country later this week and not mention any regions!
We are mainly going to be around Walcheren this time, but I should be up your way again over the winter, so keep the kettle warm!
A quick search of CWGC for Cape Breton Highlanders buried in the Netherlands shows 21 men buried at Holten Canadian War Cemetery, with death dates ranging from 23rd April to 5th May 1945. 16 of these were killed on 1st May 1945, and just one after that date on 5th May. Checking the Concentration documents confirms that several CB Highlanders & men from other regiments inc a batch from the Perth Regiment were originaly buried at Wirdum & that the reburial took place February 1946.
