Hi, I have been finding out lots of great detailed information on the Coldstream Guards 5th Battalion 1944 - 45 from this site. I recently found my Grandfathers Army number and have just received his Military paperwork. He Joined the Dorsets 1941 I know nothing then until the "Campaign stars" form that states he Served NW Europe with the 5th Battalion Coldstream Guards 09/08/44. - 08/05/45 on his notification of release form it lists him as in the 1st Battalion but I believe the 5th was dispersed into the first at the end of the war? Anyway for now I really want to know, how would I find out which Company he was in? I have his Army number if that helps? Any help or any other info, pics on this Campaign would be great, Thank you

Well done for getting his service records, it is the only way to start. Unfortunately records rarely go down to company level, what you need to do is to make a timeline of dates and regiments from enlistment to discharge and then hunt down diaries, histories, personal accounts etc. If you are lucky the diaries will contain appendices in the form of regimental orders or the like, and these may give lists of men and companies, not guaranteed, they may not.

If you provide a name/number folks around here will add anything they can and if you post up his records help interpret them.

    Hi,

Welcome to the forum. My father was a pre war regular who served in 3rd CG 1937/46..

Have you looked on Findmypast to see if he is listed in the CG records on that site?

Here is a link to a downloadable copy of the WW2 Regimental History -

If you know any of the officers names you may be able to identify his company by association with the named officer.

    Good Luck

    Steve

There are a number with the surname MEE, if that is who we are looking for, although none with a Dorsetshire service number.
